Tools for the Hearth: Broom Making and the Iron Parts

Taught by: Garry Kalajian and Larry Antonuk

Workshop Fee: $495.00

In this multi-disciplinary workshop, students will divide their time between the broom shop, making a brush with Sanborn Mills Farm broom-maker Larry Antonuk, and the smithy, forging the ironwork to complete a tool set with Garry Kalajian. The first day is devoted to broom-making skills. Students will warm up with a cobweb style broom and finish the day by completing the round plaited hearth broom.   On days two and three students will be in the forge creating the iron handle for the broom, a shovel end and handle, and a poker.  The parts will be joined by drilling and tapping holes for threaded fasteners and rivets. If time permits students can make hooks, a rack, or a stand for the set.

Experience using a coal forge and basic metal working skills are recommended.

Materials Fee: Included in the cost of the workshop.

Special Tools or Equipment: The farm makes available to students eye and ear protection, gloves, and aprons. Comfortable closed toed shoes and street clothes are recommended. If you have forge tools you like working with you are welcome to bring them.

This workshop is offered in partnership with the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance.

Workshop Policies: Please be sure to read our 2025 policies before you register for a workshop which can be found here Workshop Policies
