Working with the Hand
Eric Cannizzaro grew up in Vermont, where an early interest in natural history shaped his understanding of materials and the natural world. After high school, he spent several years traveling and working throughout Central and South America before enrolling at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington in 2010 to study natural history and ornithology. While there, he discovered the wood shop and began exploring furniture and instrument making, gradually shifting his focus from field biology to woodworking.
In 2017, Eric accepted a residency at the Arbutus Folk School, where he studied Windsor chairmaking techniques and adapted them to the tools and materials available to him. He later apprenticed with chairmaker Curtis Buchanan in Tennessee and continued his training during a residency at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Today, he lives in Charlotte, Vermont, where he builds Windsor and ladderback chairs and teaches from his home shop.
This spring at Sanborn Mills Farm, Eric will teach two workshops that celebrate traditional hand skills and the deep satisfaction of making useful objects by hand. On May 8, students will carve fan birds using time-honored knife techniques rooted in European craft traditions. On May 9–10, participants will craft a wooden pitchfork from a single ash log—an especially rewarding opportunity to experience the full arc of green woodworking, from split log to finished tool, and to leave with a durable implement shaped by their own hands.
