Bittersweet Baskets: Using Invasive Vines as Weaving Material

The mature vines of bittersweet, an invasive species that grows quickly and plentifully throughout the Northeast, can be woven into strong and beautiful baskets. In this class students will learn to responsibly remove, process, and weave with this material. We will discuss identification and responsible harvesting, and then use dried, pre-harvested material to weave a sturdy market basket.

All levels welcome; more advanced basketweavers can try their hand at weaving familiar techniques with a new material.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Responsibly harvesting bittersweet vines and processing them for weaving.
  • Stake and strand basket weaving.
  • Rolled border
  • Roped handle

 

Materials Fee: $20 paid directly to the instructor

Special Tools or Equipment: Pruners/ harvest knives (non-serrated), awl.
