Seeing Nature with New Eyes: Observational Drawing with Rebekah Lowell
What does it truly mean to see the natural world? In this immersive nature drawing workshop, students will slow down, observe closely, and discover how careful attention can transform simple sketches into expressive works of art. Guided by acclaimed illustrator and educator Rebekah Lowell, participants will build foundational drawing skills while deepening their connection to the natural objects around them.
Throughout the workshop, students will work directly from natural specimens—shells, cones, plants, and other organic forms—learning reliable methods for measuring proportions and building values to create convincing form, structure, and cast shadows. As they experiment with a variety of media, participants will train their eyes to notice subtle shifts in value and color—skills essential for capturing the texture and pattern of complex forms found in nature.
While the focus is on natural subjects, the techniques learned can be applied to a wide range of drawing styles and materials. Whether you are a beginner looking to build confidence or an experienced artist hoping to refine your practice, this class offers practical tools and a fresh perspective.
Instructor Rebekah Lowell is a Maine Master Naturalist, award-winning author and illustrator, and passionate educator with a deep curiosity for the natural world. She holds degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and Hollins University, and her artwork has been featured on the Maine Duck Stamp six times. When she’s not teaching or creating, you can find her birding, rescuing monarchs from local hayfields, or hiking the 4,000-footers in the White Mountains.
This workshop is an invitation to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the extraordinary details hidden in everyday natural objects.
