Build a Basic Fly Rod

Join locally renowned fly-fishing guide Jamie Eisenberg for a unique opportunity to build your own personalized fly rod in this 2-day workshop.

On the first day of the workshop, students will build a 3, 5, or 8 wt. carbon fiber fly rod from scratch.  Students will be guided through the assembly of the cork grip, reel seat, and guides.  Basic thread wraps will be demonstrated and executed.  Examples of decorative trim bands will be given. There is an opportunity for personalization with a vast array of thread wrap colors. Rod colors are more limited and will be determined by what’s available at the time of order.

Students will be shown how to apply finish to the thread wraps and given time to apply several coats.  Alignment dots and signature info are applied on the second day.  During the drying intervals, there will be an overview of the history of fly rod making, advanced decorative techniques, and simple rod repair.

Each student will make a fly rod ready for use at the end of the workshop.  They will also bring home a wooden thread rod wrapping jig, vials of finish, brush cleaner, a thread burnisher, and an applicator brush.

As a follow-up to this workshop, an optional Intro to Fly Fishing course on May 22, 2026, is offered as a separate registration. Come learn the skills necessary to properly use your new rod.

Materials Fee: $190 paid directly to the instructor at the time of workshop.

Special Tools or Equipment to bring: Students should bring eyeglasses (“readers”) or similar for magnification.
