Arielle Toelke
Color, Curiosity, and Creative Exploration
Arielle Toelke is a professional makeup artist who has spent more than fifteen years working in the film and television industry, collaborating on productions across the United States and internationally. She moved to Brooklyn in 2004 to pursue that career, building a reputation for precision, creativity, and adaptability in a fast-moving field. Alongside her work on set, Arielle has maintained an active studio practice focused on cut paper collage, design, and textile-based work. This season marks her fourth year teaching at Sanborn Mills Farm, where she has become a familiar and much-loved instructor known for her energy, creativity, and encouragement in the classroom.
Color sits at the center of Arielle’s creative life. Whether working with cosmetics, paper, or cloth, she is drawn to the ways materials can be layered, combined, and transformed. Teaching has become an important part of that journey, and she brings both professional experience and a playful spirit to her workshops. Students often appreciate her clear instruction, thoughtful demonstrations, and willingness to invite experimentation.
This spring, Arielle will return to the Farm to lead a three-day workshop focused on working with plant-based color. Participants will explore how natural materials can be turned into vibrant print pastes and used to build layered designs on cloth through screens and stencils. The workshop also offers time to look at the long history of printed textiles and the artists and traditions that continue to influence contemporary design.
Students can expect a lively, hands-on experience that balances technical skill-building with creative discovery. By the end of the weekend, they will leave with finished work, practical tools, and new ideas for continuing their exploration of color and pattern.

Build a Stick Chair

Over five days, shape a stick chair from solid wood, beginning with a plank and working through every stage—carving the seat, shaving legs, and crafting sticks, arms, and combs. Using ash or red oak at the bench and the shave horse, students bring form and structure together through skilled handwork. Open to all levels, this workshop offers both challenge and success, with opportunities to adapt the final design and create a chair that reflects your own hand.
Exploration of Color and Design with Natural Dye Paste

Layer color on cloth using natural dye print pastes. Using a variety of dye materials, both from the garden and extracts, students will create a rainbow to print color on cloth. In addition to covering the how-to, students will dive into the history of printed patterns and learn about the artists who have made some of the most recognizable and influential patterns throughout history.

Blacksmithing Basics

This workshop is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. Basic operations will be explained and demonstrated in detail, then used to make a hook and eye and form scrolls to join with rivets for a trivet or other project. Basic metallurgy and heat treating a punch or chisel will be explained and demonstrated. Students will be shown and encouraged to try forge welding.

Build a Basic Fly Rod

Jamie Eisenberg
Build your own custom fly rod in this two-day workshop with renowned guide Jamie Eisenberg. Students will assemble and finish a personalized 3, 5, or 8 wt. carbon fiber rod—learning thread wrapping, finishing techniques, and the history of fly rod making along the way.
