In Rush Weave Two Stools in One Day, students are introduced to the fundamentals of rush weaving through two distinct projects. The day begins with a colorful corded wool stool, an approachable and forgiving material that allows beginners to quickly grasp the weaving pattern and enjoy a satisfying sense of accomplishment. In the afternoon, students shift to natural rush, learning the same traditional pattern used for centuries in stools and chairs. By the end of the day, participants leave with two finished stools and the confidence to tackle future weaving projects using a wide range of materials.
For those ready to take on a larger and more ambitious restoration, New England Porch Weave Chair offers an in-depth exploration of one of the region’s most iconic forms of furniture. Students will weave both the seat and back of a traditional porch rocker using flat oval reed, learning specialized techniques for handling curved slats and large chair frames. These classic rockers, often found at flea markets and passed down through families, are transformed into beautiful and functional pieces ready for years of continued use.
