Breathing New Life into a Historical Snow Roller
A relic of winter transportation has been brought back to life. Once a vital tool for compacting snow on rural roads to create smoother paths for sleighs and horse-drawn carriages, this snow roller now serves as a reminder that even in a modern world, history has a vital role in shaping experiences and understanding where we come from.
The snow roller, discovered on the farm where it had long been forgotten, found its second chance at relevance through the farm’s recent addition of winter sleigh rides. Recognizing its potential to enrich the farm’s seasonal offerings while preserving its historical significance, the decision was made to restore this iconic piece of equipment.
The restoration process was taken on by our Millwright and Sawyer Brian Clough and his son Logan Clough using timber harvested sustainably from the farm’s managed forest lands, they replaced the rotting wood while preserving as much of the original material as possible. The metal work was in good condition and was carefully cleaned and treated to prevent further corrosion.
Its restoration not only highlights the ingenuity of early winter transportation methods but also underscores the importance of preserving tangible links to history.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a relationship between our farm and you as our customer. Rather than simply purchasing food, our customers become “members” of this CSA farm who receive a portion of the farm’s harvest.
Our CSA runs for 18 weeks, from the first week of June until October. Members are responsible for showing up at Sanborn Mills Farm, last barn on the right at the very end of Ring Road, Loudon, NH each week to pick up your share of freshly harvested produce. You will generally receive ½ bushel (equivalent to one full brown paper grocery bag) or ¼ bushel (equivalent to ½ of a brown paper grocery bag) of vegetables each week, depending on which share you sign up for.
Fly Tying and Sharpening Hand Tools
This workshop will introduce the student to the basic techniques of fly tying. We’ll do this by tying flies that are useful in lakes and rivers in New Hampshire, in sizes that can catch fish. We’ll practice the necessary knots, learn the necessary techniques, and understand how to choose and purchase materials. Students will learn how to rig their rods and present each type of fly.
The foundation of accurate hand tool work is having sharp tools, and the key to successful sharpening is solid technique. This one-day workshop will cover the basics of sharpening a variety of woodworking tools from chisels and planes to card scrapers, spoke shaves, and more. Bring your dull woodworking tools and leave with them tuned up and ready for work. Open to all levels including beginners.
