Painting Historic Landscapes with Lisa Curry Mair
Drawing on mid-19th-century theories by Rufus Porter, this workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of painting a landscape view in the folk art tradition. The farm’s setting will serve as inspiration as participants develop their own interpretations of the buildings, animals, gardens, and history of the site. The class will include time spent exploring scenes outdoors as well as reviewing examples of Porter’s work and other historic paintings in the studio to support idea development.
Students will be guided through the process of planning and transferring their design to canvas, with a variety of transfer techniques demonstrated to make the process approachable and manageable. Those who are less comfortable with drawing may choose to work from a provided template, while others may develop their own original composition. Each participant will be given a 39” x 27” prepared canvas to create a finished 3’ x 2’ piece. Completed works can be stretched and framed or finished as a durable painted floorcloth, with guidance provided for either option. Acrylic paints and basic brushes will be supplied, and students are welcome to bring their own preferred painting tools.
Lisa Curry Mair is the author of Floorcloth Magic (Storey Publishing, 2000), owner of Canvasworks Designs, established in 1994, and an experienced instructor who has taught floorcloth and mural painting classes throughout the United States and Canada. Her work has been featured in homes, museums, and retail spaces around the world, and one of her floorcloths was selected for use in a rebuilt home featured on the television program This Old House in 2016. Known for her approachable teaching style, Lisa focuses on helping students build confidence in their painting skills while completing a finished piece they can use and enjoy.
