Site Responsive Papermaking
Workshop Fee: $720.00
In this all-levels course, students will learn how to process plant fibers into paper. Using the bounty from Sanborn Mills Farm and its surrounding ecosystem, we will make paper from both cultivated and responsibly-harvested wild plants, focusing on the area’s abundant flax and milkweed. Cladis will also bring kozo — a Japanese papermaking plant — from his personal garden. Together, we will soak, cook, and beat our plants, transforming them into paper pulp. Each student will craft sheets of paper in the Japanese style. We will learn about papermaking as a vessel for a vibrant conversation about people, place, and ecology. Students will walk away with an in-depth understanding – and a healthy supply – of handmade paper.
Skills and Techniques:
- Processing (cooking, beating, washing) fibers for papermaking
- Japanese-style papermaking techniques
- Alternative / decorative papermaking techniques
Materials Fee: Between $77 – $96 depending on the final number of enrolled students.
Special Tools or Equipment to bring: Notebook/pencil for taking notes on papermaking process, comfortable walking shoes for when we harvest, shoes you don’t mind getting wet (though we will do our best not to!), if you have one: an apron, but not strictly necessary, feel free to bring plants from your own area that you think would turn into interesting paper, but it is not guaranteed we will have time to process everyone’s.
