Learn to Turn

This course gives turners a strong foundation of techniques for spindle and end-grain turning. Participants will learn the essentials of sharpening by creating their own tools as well as learning proper technique and sharpening on standard tools such as the roughing gouge, spindle gouge, and parting tool.

Students start with spindle turning and progress through a series of projects, creating tools such as a custom scraper, hollow turning tool, awl, and mallet. These tools will be used to create small end-grain bowls and vessels. The focus of this class is safety, problem solving, and the sheer fun of turning!

Skills and Techniques:

  • Tool making and sharpening skills and strategies
  • parts and function of the lathe
  • Roughing, replicating, and fitting
  • Proper stance and cutting techniques such as shearing and scrapping
  • Comfort on the lathe though repetition
  • Spindle and end grain cutting techniques

 

Materials Fee: $112 paid to SMF at the time of check in.
