Weave Beautiful Baskets with Painted Paper

Taught by: Ruth Boland

Workshop Fee: $280.00

Paper is a wonderful medium to weave with!  It feels nice in our hands, and once the painting is done, there’s very little mess.  Unlike dyed materials, pieces painted with acrylics will not fade in bright light. There is no struggle to find the good side, and there are no weak spots that might break.  We don’t have to judge the weight/density of the stakes and weavers.  This allows us to concentrate on colors and patterns and shaping. First, you get to paint the paper, which is great fun.  You can mix whatever color(s) you want.  You can use water to blend colors, or work dry and create layers.  You can use complementary colors or contrasting colors.  I love to make the sheet I am painting pleasing to my eye, but that is not important because we are going to cut it up and weave the pieces back together. In this class, students will make 2 baskets.  The first basket will be a small square basket where students will learn to prepare the materials, become familiar with paper basket weaving techniques, and experiment with color. The second basket will be a small cathead basket.  This basket will reinforce skills learned in the first basket.  For this basket, we will utilize the cathead base because the structure of a cathead, the tension caused by the way it is woven, creates strength.  The one thing paper doesn’t have on its own is strength, so the cathead shape is perfect for working with paper.

We will use 140lb watercolor paper, acrylic paints, and a pasta machine to cut our stakes and weavers!  Prior basket weaving experience is helpful but not required.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Painting techniques
  • Pasta machine use for cutting paper
  • Weaving a cathead base
  • Plain and twill weaving
  • Lashing the rim
