Turn Locking Lidded Boxes

Taught by: Eric Goodson

Workshop Fee: $350.00

If you feel comfortable turning side-grain bowls and want a challenge, you will love turning locking-lidded boxes.  These boxes offer a great introduction to green wood turning and Scandinavian woodenware.  By taking advantage of the way that wood dries differently along the various axes, a turner can create a small box where the lid clamps shut when twisted onto the base. Students will learn about the history of these Scandinavian boxes, how to orient the blank within the log, and the various steps and techniques in turning their boxes. Special attention will be paid to ways to measure diameter and profile to ensure that the lid properly fits the base, methods of turning on the “far wall” of the piece, and instruction in a half-doze slöjd knife grasps that allows the craftsperson to safely and efficiently carve the locking mechanism.  Each student will create at least one box.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Use of various turning tools, including bowl gouges, bottoming gouges, ring tools, scrapers, and parting tools.
  • Learning ways to turn the “far wall” of the piece to create undercuts.
  • Use of measuring tools, like outside and inside calipers, vernier calipers, and profile gauges, to create the locking mechanism.
  • Learning safe and efficient “grasps” with a slöjd knife and a hook knife to refine the shape and function of the box.
  • Techniques for safely drying the piece so that it does not crack, and the use of oils, waxes, and milk paint to finish the piece.

Materials Fee: $30 for each book matched pair of radial bowl blanks.

Special Tools or Equipment:  We will be turning green wood, so dust will be minimal, but if you want to bring a dust mask you are welcome to.  All other tools will be provided.
