Introduction to Spinning on a Wheel

Taught by: Tricia Hunt

Workshop Fee: $140.00

Welcome to the wonderful world of spinning!  At my wheel, I am grounded and connected to a long line of spinners throughout the world over thousands of years. Balanced and relaxed by the rhythm of the wheel, one is energized and inspired by the creative possibility of each new skein. In this introductory level class, you will first learn basic spinning wheel mechanics and choose a wool with which to start your spinning journey.  Working with natural and hand-dyed combed wool top you will then learn to spin, ply, and finish your first handspun yarn.

A limited number of wheels are available at the farm.  Please email marsha@sanbornmills.org to reserve one. If you have a lazy kate and/or a niddy noddy please bring those along as well.  All fiber will be provided.

  • Understand basic spinning wheel mechanics
  • Begin to learn about fiber selection
  • Learn to find the tension ‘sweet spot’
  • Learn to spin singles yarns from pre-drafted combed wool top and start to understand the basics of twist and drafting
  • Learn to ply and finish your yarn to create a 2 ply skein

Materials Fee: $25 paid directly to the instructor.
