Kathy Hattori is a textile artist deeply passionate about colors from natural sources, their rich history, and contemporary applications. Involved with textiles since 1982, she has studied with master mentors around the world. She teaches and lectures widely, including at Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Shakerag, and BARN on Bainbridge Island. Kathy is the founder and president of Botanical Colors and a globally sought-after speaker on sustainable natural dye practices.
Kathy Hattori will lead an inspiring 5-day workshop at Sanborn Mills Farm for those who love color and want to unlock beautiful, harmonious palettes using natural dyes from the Sanborn Mills dye garden. Participants will create generous fabric samples perfect for quilting, stitching, sewing, and building future stashes.
You’ll discover the power of tannins as a secret weapon for richer shades and better lightfastness, explore unusual color pairings, and master overdyeing and underdyeing with modifiers and indigo. Working in small teams, you’ll produce 2–3 stunning palettes and take home samples, recipes, and documentation to fuel your creative journey for years to come.

Fundamentals of Blacksmithing with Ashen Carey
There is a timeless allure to blacksmithing – the glowing hot metal, the rhythm of the hammer, and the satisfaction of shaping fire and steel. Ashen Carey will lead a dynamic 3-day workshop at Sanborn Mills Farm where you can experience this craft firsthand and build foundational skills that will serve every future project.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your abilities, you’ll learn proper fire control, efficient hammer and anvil techniques, and how to overcome common forging challenges. You’ll create small forged objects such as bottle openers, trivets, or wall hooks while practicing tapering, punching, scrolling, and more.
Ashen Carey’s love affair with forged iron began in 1996 in Colorado. After apprenticing at Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village Museum and training across the U.S. and Europe, he now runs a small forge in Exeter, New Hampshire. He is passionate about sharing the rich history and beauty of blacksmithing.
This workshop will ignite your passion for blacksmithing and give you the skills and confidence to create with hot metal for years to come.

Visible Mending and Creative Garment Repair with Jessamy Shay Kilcollins
Discover the joyful art of visible mending: turning repair into a creative act of self-expression and sustainability. Jessamy Shay Kilcollins will lead a welcoming one-day workshop at Sanborn Mills Farm where you’ll learn to beautifully extend the life of your favorite garments.
You’ll explore patching, darning, and embroidery techniques, create a practice sampler, and work on your own clothes while discussing color, design, and the benefits of slowing down consumption. The class is suitable for all levels and focuses primarily on hand stitching (machines available if desired).
Jessamy Shay Kilcollins is an award-winning textile artist and sustainable fashion designer who transforms secondhand materials into meaningful art through her AMENDED label. She has taught at Harvard Art Museums, Farnsworth Art Museum, Patagonia, and public libraries. A Maine native, she splits her time between Somerville, MA and Midcoast, Maine.
This workshop offers an empowering way to reconnect with your wardrobe and gain the skills to continue visible mending with creativity and confidence long after the class ends.

In Kyrgyzstan, when a daughter got married, her mother and relatives felted a rug for her. Using their ancient symbols they felted her best wishes and good luck into the rug that stayed with her for the rest of her life. In this workshop, you’ll create a felted rug (finished size approximately 3×5’ or 90×150 cm) with the instructor’s pre-felt technique, inspired by the several hundred-year-old symbols or creating your very own.
