Join us for a hands-on Wool Rug Braiding Workshop led by longtime braider and award-winning instructor Jan Sheehan. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, this class offers the perfect mix of tradition, creativity, and community.
You’ll learn the classic thumb braiding method, how to add wool strips or change colors, and finish a spiral-laced circle with a rat tail ending. Choose from a variety of wool in solids, tweeds, and plaids — every rug will be as unique as its maker.
Along the way, you’ll explore the history of rug braiding, learn how rugs are judged for quality, and get valuable resources for wool and supplies.
Jan began braiding in 1995 under the mentorship of renowned New England braider Rita Jane Davis. Since then, she’s won numerous awards, including Best in Show, People’s Choice, and Best Teacher at the Deerfield Fair. Her passion led her to teach others, and her weekly Tuesday night classes at the Northwood Community Center have become a local tradition. In 2015, Jan and her students founded The Braiders of the Lost Art, a guild dedicated to keeping this beautiful craft alive. Her work has been featured in New Hampshire To Do and the Manchester Union Leader.
