Decorative Plaster and Mouldmaking with Emmett O’Carroll

Learn the intricate art of decorative plasterwork in this hands-on workshop led by master plasterer Emmett O’Carroll. Participants will explore the full process of designing and creating a decorative plaster piece—an art form that has shaped architecture and design since the days of ancient Egypt.

Over the course of two days, students will mix, pour, run, shape, and sculpt plaster while learning essential techniques used in both historic and modern plasterwork. Together, the group will run a plaster cornice, create a detailed ceiling centerpiece, and make a mold so their work can be replicated again and again. Emmett will also share insights into the fascinating history of plasterwork and how it continues to influence contemporary design.

Originally from Ireland and now based in Kittery, Maine, Emmett O’Carroll brings nearly two decades of experience to his teaching. His career has taken him across Ireland, Australia, and the U.S., working in interior and exterior plastering, mold making, restoration, and specialty finishes such as Venetian, marmorino, and clay plasters.

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a skilled craftsman and experience the creative and collaborative process of working with plaster.
