Create a Memory Quilt with
Carol Anne Grotrian
Bring your own landscapes, still lifes, or sketches to life through fabric and stitch in a workshop led by master quilter and teacher Carol Anne Grotrian. Rooted in the Japanese tradition of boro—the artful practice of hand mending with simple running stitches—this class combines time-honored techniques with contemporary creativity.
Students will learn how to translate snapshots or sketches into fabric-based compositions, supported by practical tools such as photocopies and tracing paper to simplify patterns for quilting. After gaining an understanding of boro essentials, participants can begin with a small project, such as an all-in-one cell phone case or wallet, before moving on to larger stitched pieces.
Throughout the workshop, Carol Anne will share an overview of boro’s history and its connection to raw-edge appliqué, as well as examples of past and present landscape quilts.
Grotrian is a quilt artist with a career spanning over 35 years. Known for combining American quilting traditions with Japanese shibori dyeing, she discovered early on that shibori’s organic, flowing patterns gave her a unique voice in landscape quilts. Her work often reflects ecological themes and evokes what she calls “breathing spaces”—quiet places rooted in the natural world.
This workshop offers both beginners and experienced quilters a chance to immerse themselves in the art of boro, while also learning to see their surroundings—whether fall foliage, familiar landscapes, or favorite sketches—in a new way. Students will leave not only with stitched works of their own but also with a deeper understanding of how fabric, thread, and imagination can come together to tell a story.
