At Sanborn Mills Farm, tradition comes alive in many forms—whether guiding oxen through the woods or shaping steel at the forge. This fall, you can choose your craft with two immersive workshops: Draft Animal: Logging with Oxen and Candle Holders: Use Your Peen.

Logging with Oxen

On October 18–19, instructors Ray Ramsey and Tyler Allen will lead students into the woods to experience the age-old practice of logging with oxen. Learn how to harness and maneuver teams, hook and haul logs, and work with tools like the forecart, go-devil, peavey, and choker chains. More than just a technical skill, oxen logging connects participants to a historic way of working the land with patience, strength, and care.

Candle Holders: Use Your Peen

From October 24–26, blacksmithing instructor Beth Holmberg guides students in using cross-peen hammers to thin and shape hot steel. Projects include a medieval-style candlestick, a wall sconce, and a multi-candle piece—each blending function and artistry while refining your hammer control.

Whether you’re steering oxen or swinging a hammer, both workshops invite you to slow down, work with your hands, and gain lasting skills rooted in tradition.
