Building Skills from the Ground Up
A Hands-On Shed Building Workshop with Sarah Highland
What does it take to build something that lasts? In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore that question from the ground up by working together to construct a small but sturdy shed. Though modest in size, the project introduces many of the same carpentry skills and principles used to build a house, a barn, or even a simple bookcase.
Throughout the workshop, students will practice using a variety of carpentry tools while learning the fundamentals of framing layout, enclosure, roofing, and door construction. Along the way, they will gain a deeper understanding of how structures stand, how materials are chosen, and how thoughtful craftsmanship supports both function and longevity. The process is designed to be approachable and collaborative, welcoming complete beginners as well as those with some woodworking experience who are ready to expand their skills.
Guiding the workshop is instructor Sarah Highland, whose professional life has centered on the intersection of woodworking, design, and community. Early in her career, Sarah discovered a passion for timber framing, not only for the craft itself, but for the way building together fosters cooperation and shared accomplishment. That spirit of collaboration continues to shape her teaching today.
Sarah has taught workshops in woodworking, timber framing, stick framing, straw-clay, and straw bale construction, and has led numerous community-built playground projects. For nine years, she taught woodworking and boatbuilding at a residential apprenticeship program where working with wood in the community served as a powerful vehicle for personal growth. Today, she designs homes and barns built of real wood, teaches workshops, and consults with owner-builders, bringing both practical knowledge and a thoughtful approach to every project.
Participants in this workshop can expect more than just technical instruction. They will gain confidence using tools, develop a stronger understanding of building principles, and experience the satisfaction of creating something tangible alongside others. By the end of the session, the finished shed will stand as a shared accomplishment—and as a reminder that building skills are learned best through doing.
Once the workshop is complete, the finished shed will be offered for sale, providing a tangible example of the skills and craftsmanship developed during the class
