Discover the Art of French Polishing in a Two-Day Workshop with Brad Wolcott

This July, Sanborn Mills Farm invites woodworkers of all experience levels to explore the refined, centuries-old art of French Polishing in a hands-on two-day workshop led by accomplished furniture maker Brad Wolcott. Whether you’re just starting your woodworking journey or looking to add a traditional finishing technique to your repertoire, this immersive course offers a rare opportunity to learn from a dedicated craftsman in a welcoming and inspiring setting.

French Polishing is a classic wood finishing process known for its deep, glossy finish and use of shellac—a natural resin with versatile applications. In this workshop, students will move step-by-step through the full process, beginning with material selection and surface preparation, and culminating in the high-gloss rubout that gives French Polishing its signature luster. The course also explores other uses of shellac beyond French Polishing, expanding students’ understanding of this unique material.

No prior experience in finishing or French Polishing is required. Safety will be a central focus, with detailed instruction on proper personal protective equipment and the safe handling and disposal of materials.

Guiding this experience is Brad Wolcott, a professional furniture maker who graduated from Boston’s prestigious North Bennet Street School in 2012 and has since built a career in both the studio and contract furniture worlds. Now based in Concord, New Hampshire, Brad brings a sculptural and nature-inspired approach to his work, blending soft curves and hard lines in designs that elevate the natural beauty of wood. For Brad, building by hand is both a joy and a profound process—one he’s excited to share with students in this workshop.

This special course will be held over two days, and registration closes two weeks before the start date—on July 5, 2025. Don’t miss your chance to learn this beautiful and meditative technique with an experienced guide.

Register today and take your woodworking to the next level with the timeless elegance of French Polishing.
