Meet Kelly Fahey, the Farm’s New Head Chef
“My mom, dad, and sister are all very picky eaters. I used to cook with my grandmother and we would make a lot of different things that my family would not eat,” laughs Kelly Fahey, the new head chef at Sanborn Mills Farm. Her family’s pickiness didn’t deter Kelly, however: As a teen she watched Rachel Ray on the Food Network and realized “I could cook for a living.” She attended Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island as a culinary arts and foodservice management major.
A native of rural Massachusetts, Kelly will oversee the Farm’s foodservice for workshop participants and guests. Working with farm manager Ray Ramsey, she will use ingredients from our own gardens and fields as much as possible. “You will be seeing simple yet modern dishes fresh from the Farm. What we don’t grow or raise on the farm will be local and organic as well,” she says. “My goal in building this kitchen from scratch is to find a happy medium between family-style cooking and farm-to-table restaurant dining.”
She adds that as soon as she drove onto the Farm for the first time, “there was a calming and peaceful presence that I was not used to being a city girl for the last decade. It’s almost like you are in a different era. The more I learn about the farm and Paula & Colin’s mission to be a self-sustainable learning community, the more I fall in love with being a part of the whole process.”
