Over the past couple of seasons students have expressed an interest in taking the skills they learn in Blacksmithing Basics to the next level.  In response, we’ve scheduled two “Intermediate Blacksmithing” workshops  for 2019. The first is set for the end of May and the second one is in mid-July.  Both will be taught by Garry Kalajian.

Garry will be offering Blacksmithing Basics workshops throughout the season and specialty workshops in kitchen utensils, door hardware, and tool making.

Blacksmith Joel Tripp from Saco, ME will be back again, this time to teach two workshops. The first one will be on making two very important tools for the blacksmith shop – a cross pein hammer and a set of tongs. The second workshop will focus on making woodworking tools – a chisel and a draw shave.

Blacksmith Lucian Avery from Hardwick, VT will also be teaching two workshops. The first one will be on making a small hand axe, perfect for all kinds of projects at home and when out in the woods camping. The second workshop will combine blacksmithing, leatherwork, and woodcarving. Students make a carving knife, a custom rawhide sheath and then use the knife to do some whittling of a small wooden knife and spoon.

Joining us for the first time from Hebron, NY with be blacksmith Jordan LaMothe who specializes in blade making. He will be teaching a workshop on making a chef knife with custom fitted handle.

Fiber Arts . . .

Once again, we welcome Michele Hollick of Hollis, NH back to teach a 2-day workshop in making traditional stenciled floor cloths. Students leave with two 2ft x 3ft floor cloths that are perfect for any room.

Wendy Jensen of Monterey, MA will be back again to teach basket making – this time students will spend a day making a Williamsburg Carrying basket.

New to the farm will be Linda Scherz (Allen) from Rome, NY who will be teaching a 2-day workshop in making a classic Adirondack pack basket.

We are very happy to welcome our neighbor Pam Bartlett of Loudon, NH who will teach a 2-day introduction to rug hooking.

Woodworking . . .

In 2019, we will be holding our first woodworking workshops. Head carpenter Kevin A. Schurman along with staff carpenters by Emma Woodward and Jake Farmer will teach a one-day introduction to hand tools followed by a 2-day workshop in making traditional sash windows.

Oxen Skills . . .

Led by Tim Huppe, the oxen program will once again have a mixture of workshops – some teaching skills of working in the gardens and woods and two workshops in making the all-important neck yoke that allow oxen to work effectively together.

The oxen teamsters were busy in October with private instruction.  Thanks go out to the folks from Hale Farm & Village, a museum of the Western Reserve Historical Society in Bath, Ohio who spent three days at the farm working on their teamster skills.
