Farm facts . . .
Now that the days are getting longer, our chickens are laying eggs again. How many hours of daylight do chickens need to lay? Typically, they need 14 hours. Opinions vary on the practice of using artificial light in the winter to keep them laying. What do you think?
History facts . . .
Six generations of Sanborns lived and worked on this farm from 1773 to 1996. It all started when John Sanborn, who grew up on the seacoast, purchased land that included the site of a working water-powered up-and-down sawmill on what was then called Gilmanton Pond. Built by John’s father Elisha in partnership with Abraham Bachilor in the 1760s, the sawmill stood where the gristmill is today.
2016 Workshop series at the farm . . .
Working in gardens and in the woods with animals is satisfying and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. We’ve got some of the most experienced and knowledgeable instructors right here at the farm. This year our draft animal workshops are concentrated on training oxen teamsters. We will be expanding into workshops with draft horses in 2017. Learn more . . .
