Wishing you a Happy July 4th Weekend !
The early history of our country is deeply interwoven with draft animals. In colonial days, oxen were used to clear fields, bring logs out of the forest, and haul cannons and supply wagons to the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. Working with oxen and draft horses productively and safely takes knowledge refined and passed down through generations.

Blacksmithing was also important to the success of the Revolutionary War. In their day, blacksmiths made most anything anyone needed out of metal including nails, knives, tools of all sorts, door latches, hinges, and hardware for carts, wagons, and carriages. As inventors and repairmen, they were essential to community life.

Sanborn Mills Farm is committed to preserving draft animal and blacksmithing knowledge through daily work on the farm and through workshops. Training in oxen basics and logging with oxen and draft horses starts up in August and goes through November.
Draft animal workshops are taught by a highly skilled team that includes Sanborn Mills Farm’s Tim Huppe, a nationally respected oxen teamster. Blacksmithing workshops at the farm are taught by master blacksmith Garry Kalajian.
