Join blacksmith Ian McCarthy for a three-day immersive workshop where fire, steel, and creativity come together to craft heirloom-quality cooking tools. This hands-on course invites students to explore the fundamentals of hand forging with a focus on thoughtful design, functionality, and the lasting beauty of handmade cookware.

Participants will begin by learning basic forging techniques, using both two-piece riveted construction and single-piece forging methods. Through these foundational skills, students will create essential cooking utensils—each one shaped with intention and precision. The workshop will culminate in the forging of a hand-crafted skillet, completing a cooking set that is both decorative and built to last for generations.

Ian McCarthy brings nearly a decade of blacksmithing experience to the forge. Known for his dedication to crafting functional cookware with clean, purpose-driven forms, Ian runs his own shop focused on traditional tools for the kitchen. He is a member of the Connecticut Blacksmith Guild and a frequent demonstrator at the Connecticut Antique Machinery Association, where he shares his knowledge of historic metalworking techniques.

This workshop is ideal for those with some experience working at a coal forge; however, beginners with a strong interest are also welcome to join. Whether you’re looking to expand your forging skills or take home a handmade set of tools you’ll use every day, this workshop offers an unforgettable blend of craftsmanship and culinary tradition.
