Wood, a tradition of survival . . .
Since the early settlement of New Hampshire, wood has been key to survival, especially in the winter. Sanborn Mills Farm maintains the “deeply rooted” traditions of surviving with wood, starting with how it is harvested in the woods, to heating with it, to building with it. Firewood is cut as part of our timber stand improvement program, which involves periodic weeding and thinning of the forest. Low quality trees are cut, giving space for high quality trees to grow and be harvested later for high quality lumber for our building projects. Our oxen and draft horses are used to haul logs and firewood out of the woods and to transport cut firewood to where we need it. Most of our firewood is used for the boiler that heats the Red House
A newly installed pellet boiler heats the Main House and has the capacity to provide heat for the new dining hall, kitchen, and carriage house when they are completed. Locally harvested pulp, including product from our farm, is shipped to our pellet supplier for the production of pellets. Sanborn Mills Farm, while preserving practices of the past, also embraces what is useful about technology, so a computerized monitoring system lets us know when pellets are low and if any problems arise. If you’ve been to our website lately, you probably noticed that the Blacksmithing Basics workshops are filling up. Word has it that we can thank the History Channel’s show Forged in Fire for some of this enthusiasm. Check it out!
