Autumn eNews from Sanborn Mills Farm
Crisp nights brought the brilliant colors of Autumn to the farm. As we prepare for the oncoming winter, fields are being prepared for next season’s hay.
This year, our sustainable farm program grew wheat and rye. The traditional skills of harvesting, drying and threshing grains are being perfected as part of our goal to preserve these skills and provide seed for winter cover crops.
Repairs to the dam that provides water power to the grist mill and saw mill were completed this month. They included a new concrete penstock that will give the grist mill and saw mill another hundred or more years of use.
Plans for the expansion of educational programs at Sanborn Mills Farm include being able to provide places to gather, housing and food. The cellar of the Sanborn Barn has been fully excavated to accommodate a kitchen and comfortable dining, while the front porch of the main house has been expanded to provide easier access to offices and upstairs lodging.
We are busy lining up workshops for the 2016 season and will let you know when they are available on the Sanborn Mills Farm website. Until then, Happy Halloween!
