Turn Locking-Lidded Boxes with Eric Goodson

Are you ready for a new challenge? Turning locking-lidded boxes offers a perfect next step for those who feel comfortable turning side-grain bowls. These ingenious Scandinavian vessels utilize the natural properties of green wood to create a snug, twisting fit between the lid and base—a satisfying detail that seamlessly blends function and tradition.

In this hands-on workshop with Eric Goodson, students will explore the history of these boxes while learning advanced turning and carving techniques. You’ll practice orienting blanks, measuring precise diameters, turning undercuts on the “far wall,” and using slöjd and hook knives to refine the locking mechanism. Each participant will complete at least one finished box and learn methods for safe drying and finishing with oils, waxes, or milk paint.

Eric Goodson, a carver and woodturner based in Newburyport, Massachusetts, began his green woodworking journey in 2013 after building his first pole lathe. A former high school history teacher turned full-time craftsperson, he now teaches at the Fuller Craft Museum, the Eliot School for Fine and Applied Arts, and his own shop. His teaching combines precision, patience, and a deep respect for Scandinavian craft traditions, making this class an inspiring experience for any woodturner looking to expand their skills.
