From Log to Ladderback: Green Woodworking and Chairmaking with Eric Cannizzaro
This summer at Sanborn Mills Farm, join instructor Eric Cannizzaro for a five-day immersion into the craft of green woodworking and ladderback chairmaking. In this workshop, students will experience the full process of traditional chairmaking—from splitting raw logs to shaping elegant furniture by hand, all using simple tools and age-old techniques.
This class is designed for anyone with a curiosity for working with their hands—no previous woodworking experience required, just an open mind and a willingness to learn. Over the course of five days, participants will transform freshly cut wood into a beautiful, functional 2-slat ladderback chair, learning fundamental green woodworking techniques along the way.
While this workshop is full of hands-on learning and physical work, it’s equally filled with camaraderie, satisfaction, and the quiet joy of shaping wood into something lasting and meaningful. Along the way, students will also gain insight into chair design, tool use, and working intuitively with their hands and eyes—skills that extend far beyond this single project.
Eric Cannizzaro brings both skill and soul to his teaching. A native of Vermont, Eric has spent his life steeped in the natural world and traditional craftsmanship. After years of traveling and studying natural history and ornithology at The Evergreen State College in Washington, Eric found his way to the wood shop—first through instrument making, then furniture, and eventually chairmaking. His passion for green woodworking was sharpened through residencies at the Arbutus Folk School and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and a pivotal apprenticeship with renowned Windsor chairmaker Curtis Buchanan in Tennessee.
