Introduction to Finishing for Woodworkers:

A Comprehensive Guide to Fine Furniture Techniques

For woodworkers who want to elevate the look and longevity of their work, finishing is just as important as joinery or design. This summer, join expert woodworker Brad Wolcott for Hand-Applied Finishes for Fine Furniture, a comprehensive three-day workshop at Sanborn Mills Farm that explores the full range of traditional hand-applied finishing techniques.

Designed for woodworkers of all levels, this class is a deep dive into the art and science of fine furniture finishing. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and a passion for craftsmanship. Students will gain the confidence to select and apply the ideal finish for any project, whether they’re building a new piece or restoring an old one.

Brad will guide participants through every step of the process, beginning with essential surface preparation techniques like planing, scraping, and sanding. From there, students will explore various finishing materials and methods, including brushing, padding, and rag application. Each technique will be paired with a discussion of how and when to use it, giving students a clear understanding of the strengths and characteristics of different finishes.

Over the course of the workshop, students will complete five practical exercises, each using a different combination of finishes and coloring agents. These hands-on projects culminate in a set of five personalized sample boards—an invaluable reference tool that can guide future finishing decisions for years to come.

Whether you’re aiming for a satin sheen, a warm hand-rubbed glow, or a layered, color-rich finish, this class will give you the tools and knowledge to achieve professional results in your own shop.

Please Note: Due to extended material lead times, registration for this workshop will close on July 31. Be sure to register early to secure your place.

This is a rare opportunity to gain direct instruction from a seasoned furniture maker and finisher in a setting that encourages experimentation, learning, and community. Join us and take your woodworking to the next level—one finish at a time.
