Exploring Dry Flies & Tools for the Hearth

Trout fishing on a dry fly is often called the pinnacle of fly fishing — where skill, patience, and timing come together in perfect harmony. In this intermediate-level workshop, students will learn the techniques and materials for tying a range of dry flies, from Catskill dries to emergers, Klinkhammers, and spinners. Led by Larry Antonuk, who discovered his passion for traditional craft and fine detail through broom making and fly tying, participants will leave with a collection of hand-tied flies ready for local streams and rivers — and a deeper appreciation for this timeless angling art.
November 7–9
Explore two traditional crafts — broom-making and blacksmithing — to create a complete hearth set. Under the guidance of broom-maker Larry Antonuk, who discovered his passion after a life-changing tutorial at the Enfield Shaker Museum, participants will craft a cobweb broom and a round-plaited hearth broom. Then, with blacksmith Garry Kalajian, a full-time smith since 1993 known for his refined work and mastery of traditional techniques, students will forge matching iron handles, a shovel, and a poker. The result is a beautifully handcrafted, functional set a perfect blend of fire, fiber, and craftsmanship.
