Crafting Traditions

A new tradition now marks the start of workshop days. Thanks to Studio Manager Craig Mabie, students gather in the Grange at 9:00 AM for a trivia question, and whoever guesses correctly earns the honor of ringing the Grange bell. Completed just last year, the clock tower features its bell, belfry, cupola, weathervane, finials, railings, and moulding, and has quickly become a centerpiece of campus life. This lighthearted ritual is a fun way to bring together students from different workshops before they dive into their day of hands-on learning.

Fall Goodies for Sale at the Farm!

Thank you to everyone who was able to come out to our second annual Fall Festival on Saturday. It was a great event, and we are happy to announce that we have plenty of pumpkins, gourds, squash, and corn stalks for sale. Please stop by the farm Wednesday-Friday from 10-2 to pick up your fall essentials. Sales will be held at the CSA Barn at the Merrill Farm located at 131 Ring Road.

Mosaic Knitting and Forged Kitchen Knife

We’re excited to offer our first-ever Community Class at Sanborn Mills Farm!

Join Head Gardener Helen Westergren for a hands-on morning in the garden, where you’ll learn practical techniques for dividing perennials, cutting plants back at the right time, and managing leaves to build healthy soil. Participants will leave with new confidence for fall garden care—and a handy cheat sheet to bring home.

These new classes are designed with our local community in mind, and we encourage everyone to share ideas for future offerings. We also hope to schedule next year’s classes at different times and on different days to accommodate a wide variety of working situations.

The class runs from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a farm-fresh lunch (included in the price).

Learn the magic of mosaic knitting in this beginner-friendly workshop, where you’ll master simple slip-stitch colorwork and create your own pair of cozy hand warmers.

In this five-day workshop, forge your own high-carbon cooking knife while learning the essentials of blade design, heat treatment, grinding, and handle fitting.
