Hatchet Making

In this workshop students will be guided in making a hatchet using traditional processes: first shaping the head from a heavy flat strip of soft iron, folding it over to form the poll and eye, welding the section of the blade just beyond the eye, inserting and forge welding a piece of hardenable steel, then drawing out the blade. Teamwork will hasten the heavy bar hammering, so plan to work with another or come with a friend. Following the forge work we will refine the shape by filing and grinding, harden and temper it, and sharpening. If time permits students can cut, shape, and fit a handle. This is a very demanding project. Students lacking experience working in a coal forge and basic hammer technique are encouraged to first take Blacksmithing Basics, but all are welcome.

Materials Fee: Included in the cost of the workshop.

Special Tools or Equipment:  Eye and ear protection, gloves, and aprons are available to students. Comfortable closed-toed shoes and street clothes are recommended. If you have forge tools you like working with you are welcome to bring them.
