Introduction to Spinning and Weaving Linen

Workshop Fee: $720.00

In this workshop, students will learn about flax spinning, and explore weaving linen on 4 shaft looms. This workshop is geared towards beginning students, and no prior spinning or weaving experience is required.

Participants will learn the entire process of designing a simple project, dressing the loom, weaving, and finishing their linen.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Learn the vocabulary of spinning and weaving linen (line, tow, draft, twist, parts of a spindle, spinning wheel, loom, etc.)
  • Learn how to spin, skein off, and wet finish handspun linen yarn
  • Design a simple weaving project and describe it in writing
  • Wind a warp and dress a loom
  • Weave linen cloth
  • Learn how to finish your handwoven cloth once it’s off the loom

Sanborn Mills Farm has 5 looms to loan on a first come first served basis. If you would like to reserve a loom please email marsha@sanbornmills.org immediately after you register for the workshop.

Materials Fee: $20-30 paid directly to the instructor

Special Tools or Equipment to bring: A spinning wheel or spindle if you have one but not required. Please contact marsha@sanbornmills.org to supply a photo and description of your loom if you choose to bring one. Please know for certain the loom is in good working order.
