Introduction to Indigo using Extract Powder
Workshop Fee: $144.00
In this one day class students will learn to make two types of indigo vats – a fructose vat and an iron vat. Students will learn the pros and cons of different vats and how to maintain a vat for prolonged use. This is a great opportunity for those new to indigo and those who may have dyed with indigo before and are ready to make their own vat.
Skills and Techniques:
- Make an indigo iron vat with powdered indigo extract, ferrous sulfate, and slaked lime
- Make an indigo fructose vat with powdered indigo extract, fructose, and slaked lime
- Learn how to use and maintain an iron vat over time.
- Learn some basic shibori techniques.
- Dye 4 cotton bandanas (that can be used as napkins)
- Over dye one piece of natural fiber clothing brought from home
Materials Fee: $20
Special Tools or Equipment: Students are invited to bring one piece of natural fiber clothing (such as cotton or linen) that they would like to over dye with indigo. Wash it in hot water and dish detergent in preparation for dyeing.
