Gasali Adeyemo
Gasali Adeyemo is a textile artist and educator from Ofatedo, a small rural village in Osun State, Nigeria. The third of five children, Gasali learned the traditional arts of the Yoruba people from his mother, his first and most influential teacher.
In 1990, he began his formal training at the Nike Center for Arts and Culture, where he spent six years mastering and teaching traditional textile techniques. During his first two years at the center, he specialized in batik painting on fabric, indigo dyeing, quilt making, embroidery, appliqué, and batik on rice paper. He then spent the following four years teaching these skills to new students, helping to preserve and pass on Yoruba artistic traditions.
Gasali’s work has since taken him around the world, where he leads workshops and exhibitions that celebrate the rich textile heritage of Nigeria. His recent teaching engagements include Aya Fiber Studio, Mendocino Art Center, and the John C. Campbell Folk School.
Now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gasali continues to create, teach, and share the arts and culture of the Yoruba people with global audiences, inspiring others through his dedication to craft, tradition, and cultural storytelling.
