Sarah K. Benning

Sarah K. Benning is a Baltimore-based artist and DIY designer specializing in contemporary embroidery. She holds a BFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating in 2013, Sarah discovered her love for hand embroidery while working as a nanny and became self-taught in the craft. Her work is characterized by bold compositions, vibrant color palettes, and a fusion of drawing, painting, and stitching techniques.

Sarah’s signature style features densely stitched and mixed media images of houseplants and imaginary interiors, often outlined in black, reflecting her love for midcentury design and nature. She approaches each piece as an illustration, starting with a drawing made directly on fabric before adding layers of paint and thread. This approach allows her to create rich textures and dynamic compositions that blend fine art and traditional craft.

In addition to her original artworks, Sarah offers embroidery kits, digital patterns, and other DIY offerings through her website sarahkbenning.com
