Forged Kitchen Knife

Workshop Fee: $825.00

In this five-day workshop students will forge 6”-8” hidden tang high carbon cooking knives. We will review the basics of forging, grinding, heat treatment, handle fitting, and polishing. We will also cover the particulars of effective kitchen knife design. The knives will feature polished blades and multi-piece handles with a metal or organic bolster and a wooden grip. Prior experience with forging and knife making will be beneficial, this is an intermediate beginner class.

Students are strongly encouraged to have had previous forging experience.

Skills and Techniques:

  • Forging and grinding thin blades
  • Accurate heat treatment by eye
  • Kitchen knife design
  • Handle ergonomics
  • Hidden tang handle construction
  • Sharpening

 

Materials Fee: $40 for horn/antler or brass/silver handle materials plus consumables.

Special Tools or Equipment: Safety glasses, leather work gloves, sketchbook/notebook, ear plugs, non-flammable work clothes (no synthetic materials), closed-toed leather shoes/boots, water bottle, any forging tools you may have that you’re comfortable with (hammer, tongs, etc.).
