You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				In this three-day workshop\, students will make a one-pound hand ax that can be used at home\, in the woodshed\, or on all of your outdoor adventures. The first two days will be spent forging the ax head out of salvaged steel. After completing the basic shape\, it will be heat-treated and sharpened. On the third day\, students will use hand tools to hang the handle\, carving and securing it to the ax head. Students will then be able to try their ax out on a small woodworking project. If time permits\, students will make a protective sheath out of rawhide. Along the way there will be discussions on ax design\, basic metallurgy and heat treating\, as well as how to use an ax safely and effectively. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — the classes do not need to be taken in order. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. Upon completion of any one of these classes\, students may arrange to work in the studio individually\, when it is open\, for a use fee.  \nThere are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nThis workshop will cover the basics of working with powdered natural indigo extract to make and maintain a vat for long term use using ferrous sulfate as the reduction agent. Other natural vats\, using organic materials such as henna or fruit sugar will be discussed and demonstrated if there is interest. The advantage of the iron vat is that it is very stable\, so advantageous in a workshop setting. The essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Basic shibori techniques using stitching (mokume)\, pole wrapping (arashi)\, and clamping (itajime) will be taught. We will also explore ways to use clay paste resist (for painting and printing) and Japanese rice paste resist technique (katazome) with stencils. We will be working primarily with cellulose fiber (cotton\, linen etc.). Protein (silk\, wool\, etc.) will be discussed and samples shown. Cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \nThe indigo extract used in this workshop will be extract that is available commercially. Join us for a two-day workshop to learn the things you need know about bringing a pair home\, finding the right equipment for them\, and learning how to work them. Our experienced instructors will train you in a safe and productive environment. \nStudents will learn the basics of selecting a team or single ox\, halter training\, basic commands\, and proper yoking and fitting. The instructors will demonstrate the navigation of a team with equipment while explaining proper body language\, position\, and voice commands. Students will have the opportunity to practice navigating their team on multiple pieces of equipment. When students feel comfortable\, they will drive teams throughout Sanborn Mills Farm under the supervision of our experienced teamsters. Much of the training will be based upon the day-to-day work at Sanborn Mills Farm. \nStudents are encouraged to bring a team to the farm and should contact Ray Ramsey at least three weeks prior to the workshop start date to discuss this possibility. Out-of-state cattle must have a state health certificate from a veterinarian. You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge and mild steel. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. Those who have some previous blacksmithing experience are welcome to undertake a special project for more in-depth instruction. You may join the waitlist or find a similar workshop on a different date. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Blacksmithing Basics is for students who are new to blacksmithing and those with some experience looking to improve their skillset. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, bending\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork.
