This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nThis is truly a class about color! In this workshop\, students will dye yarn as skeins or in wound warps for weaving. Students use immersion baths to dye the fiber all one color and make dyes into thickened paints for painting skeins and warps different colors. It is rare\, in introductory dye classes\, to ever get to the stage of mixing colors and inventing new combinations. In this workshop\, students will explore this process\, both in the dye baths and for the paints. At the time of the workshop\, plants will be ready to use for dyeing from the Sanborn Mills Farm dye garden. Students will also use concentrated dye extracts to make into stock solutions for mixing paints. Students will explore the vessel form through experimentation and invention. \nOn the first\, day\, students will explore the technique of creating sculptural wet felted vessels. Through wet felting techniques\, students will learn to create a sphere or round form and transform it into a vessel\, pod or bowl. Using the ancient process of wet felting\, wool can be transformed into many things. Our focus will be creating a 3D form using a flat circle or oval resist. We will create a using wool roving\, soap and water\, and a resist. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous felt making experience. \nOn the second day\, students will explore the technique of random weaving. It’s not your traditional basket weaving! We will be experimenting with non-traditional techniques to create sculptural forms\, using various material from paper rush to plant material. Student swill be encouraged to use whatever material is suitable to create the desired form\, ex: bowls\, bag of rice\, crumpled paper bound with sticky tape. This is a workshop for those who like exploration and invention. This technique is mostly used to explore form and the unique qualities of the materials used. What you envision in the beginning may not be what comes to fruition but it will be a fun\, meditative process that can open up new ideas and avenues. Embellishment can include yarns\, raffia and colored electrical wire. We will start small and if time permits\, students may choose to start another piece. Students will use an innately colorful selection of willows cultivated at Sanborn Mills and Willow Vale Farms. Students will also learn about the cultivation and processing of this historically important natural material. Our baskets will be built from a round base with weaves mostly in the European tradition\, including pairing\, waling\, randing and woven borders. Every student’s basket will be different! This class is suitable for beginners wanting to learn a base of weaving knowledge or intermediate weavers looking to improve skills and control. On the first day\, students will learn how  to transfer the natural images to primary paper and some cotton cloth will also be used.  \nOn the second day\, students will use the dyed papers to create a unique book. Each culture has a unique approach to fashioning garlands\, but all cultures value their beauty and make them with care and skill. \nCome join fiber artist Lynn Martin Graton and learn two basic techniques to create fresh garlands for your seasonal celebrations\, weddings\, birthdays and more. The core of this workshop will cover various approaches to successful mordanting and dyeing of these plant-based fibers. \nThe class will use both immersion and printing techniques\, including mordant printing\, direct application of dyes\, mordant discharge\, and layering of color. Mordants will include both alum and iron and we will use tannins extensively. \nThe class will make a natural indigo vat and explore immersion dyeing\, color mixing\, and printing applications with indigo\, including indigo discharge and resists. \nEmphasis will be placed on experimentation and accurate record keeping. Each student will build a notebook of samples and processes for future reference and use. The first day of this class will cover proper fiber preparation and mordanting for cellulose and protein fibers with both alum and iron. Students will then dye the yarn and cloth samples in these dye baths. In the afternoon\, students will go to the dye garden to harvest several kinds of flowers to use in dye baths such as weld\, coreopsis\, calendula\, marigold\, rudbeckia\, and cosmos. The dye plants will then soak overnight to be used the next day in dye baths. Students will also dig madder root and prepare the root to be used for dyeing. Finally\, students will pick indigo leaves and extract the pigment using the water extraction method. This is a two-day process that will result in a dark blue “pudding” that can be used for a small dye vat. We will work with both tow and line flax fibers\, learn how to make a simple distaff\, dress it with flax\, and spin\, using both hand spindles and spinning wheels. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn to dye with fresh indigo leaves and the water extraction method for extracting indigo pigment from freshly harvested plants. There are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Polygonum or Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nStudents will first work with fresh indigo harvested from the dye garden at Sanborn Mills Farm. Using fresh leaves\, ice cubes\, and a blender\, students will dye silk scarves immediately for a lovely blue. Students can experiment with multiple batches to deepen the color.  \nStudents will then use the water extraction process to extract pigment from freshly harvested indigo leaves. In this two-day process\, students will soak\, aerate\, precipitate\, and filter indigo. Then\, students will use this pigment to make an indigo vat for dyeing protein and cellulose. \nThe essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Silk scarves and cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. In this daylong workshop\, we will learn how to use a great wheel\, and experiment with different fiber selections and preparations for great wheel spinning. \nWe will look at examples of different great wheel designs\, learn how to adjust\, maintain and make simple repairs to great wheels\, and will learn how to recognize a great wheel that could still be used for spinning when one encounters it ‘in the wild.’ \nThis workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of handspinning\, but may also be of interest to new spinners. He simplified the rigid scientific concepts of color and stressed the importance of learning to depend upon one’s own sense of sight. His discoveries culminated in his classic treatise on color\, The Interaction of Color\, published in1963\, while he was teaching at Yale. Albers was obsessed with understanding the peculiarities of color\, referring to it as a relative sensation\, which he illustrated in thousands of paintings\, serigraphs and color studies based on the square\, created over a lifetime. His take-away message was that no color stands purely alone uninfluenced by its surroundings\, the appearance of a color at any given time and location is conditioned by many\, many factors. \nEach participant in this workshop will create a personal color reference journal using striking and visually opulent Color-aid coated papers in 314 swatches\, which include 24 hues\, dark shades\, light shades\, and 17 grays. \nColor work requires focus\, attention to detail\, and reflection.  It is important that attendees approach the building of exercises with precision. Color differentiations will be seen and understood more clearly if individuals are prepared to work thoughtfully and with care. \nThis workshop is an inspiring & unusual opportunity to refine your color skills specifically as they apply to your art and your personal point of view.
