Traditional ink making plant materials\, such as buckthorn berries and oak galls\, ground our color palette with durable bold tones\, while pokeweed and wild grape lend an ephemeral splash of brilliance. We will explore tannins in particular\, a family of plant chemicals responsible for many long-lasting dyes and inks\, including the classic indelible dark writing ink. Much of the training will be based upon the day-to-day work at Sanborn Mills Farm\, in which oxen singles and teams haul fire wood and saw logs from deep in the woods along trails to the main road. \nThe function of the logging forecart\, scoot\, and go-devil will be explained before heading out to the woods with the animals. Proper use of a peavey for rolling logs\, and the correct way to hook logs with choker chains – both to a cart and by twitching (ground skidding) – will be covered. The workshop will move at a pace agreeable for all students. Instructors will take time to work safely and explain each function in detail. \nStudents are encouraged to bring a team to the farm and should contact Ray Ramsey at least three weeks prior to the workshop start date to discuss this possibility. Wet felting is a magical way to turn loose wool fibers into fabric without spinning\, knitting or weaving. It is method employed in everything from making hats\, slippers and warm boots to the felt homes of Central Asia. This ancient technique differs from “needle felting” and some other felting techniques in that wet felting relies only on the nature of the fibers\, a little soap & water\, and some elbow grease to make a beautiful rugged fabric. \nStudents will make bags using a resist method of felting that is applicable to all kinds of projects. Prin will discuss other felting methods and traditions of the craft while students work on projects. \nStudents will also learn about the process of preparing wool for feltmaking. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn to use foraged wild materials for use in the dye pot. On the first day of class\, students will learn the proper fiber preparation and mordanting for cellulose and protein fibers with both alum and iron. Protein (yarn) and cloth samples will be dyed in these baths. The class will then go outdoors to collect dye materials. At this time of year there\, there will be many materials available for collection. Students will collect leaves from trees\, nuts\, bark\, wildflowers\, roots and lichen. The class will then return to the studio with their collected dye treasures to photograph\, identify\, and prepare the material for dyeing. Most collected material will require an overnight soak before being made into a bath. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides\, hunters\, and trappers took with them into the woods. This will be a weekend of weaving your utilitarian pack. Create your own utilitarian pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets.  \nOn the first day\, students weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut reed spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will be guiding students as they concentrate on shape\, creating a belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done the first day. The baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day\, students will pack baskets tight\, level the top\, weave a false rim\, cut and tuck spokes\, insert a handmade oak handle\, and fit the rim to the basket\, and lash rim. Lastly\, students will add an adjustable webbing or leather harness secured with skids. Linda will guide you and teach you many tips and techniques. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nThis is truly a class about color! In this workshop\, students will dye yarn as skeins or in wound warps for weaving. Students use immersion baths to dye the fiber all one color and make dyes into thickened paints for painting skeins and warps different colors. It is rare\, in introductory dye classes\, to ever get to the stage of mixing colors and inventing new combinations. In this workshop\, students will explore this process\, both in the dye baths and for the paints. At the time of the workshop\, plants will be ready to use for dyeing from the Sanborn Mills Farm dye garden. Students will also use concentrated dye extracts to make into stock solutions for mixing paints. Students will explore the vessel form through experimentation and invention. \nOn the first\, day\, students will explore the technique of creating sculptural wet felted vessels. Through wet felting techniques\, students will learn to create a sphere or round form and transform it into a vessel\, pod or bowl. Using the ancient process of wet felting\, wool can be transformed into many things. Our focus will be creating a 3D form using a flat circle or oval resist. We will create a using wool roving\, soap and water\, and a resist. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous felt making experience. \nOn the second day\, students will explore the technique of random weaving. It’s not your traditional basket weaving! We will be experimenting with non-traditional techniques to create sculptural forms\, using various material from paper rush to plant material. Student swill be encouraged to use whatever material is suitable to create the desired form\, ex: bowls\, bag of rice\, crumpled paper bound with sticky tape. This is a workshop for those who like exploration and invention. This technique is mostly used to explore form and the unique qualities of the materials used. What you envision in the beginning may not be what comes to fruition but it will be a fun\, meditative process that can open up new ideas and avenues. Embellishment can include yarns\, raffia and colored electrical wire. We will start small and if time permits\, students may choose to start another piece. All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge and mild steel. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics\, metallurgy\, and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. Each culture has a unique approach to fashioning garlands\, but all cultures value their beauty and make them with care and skill. \nCome join fiber artist Lynn Martin Graton and learn two basic techniques to create fresh garlands for your seasonal celebrations\, weddings\, birthdays and more. The core of this workshop will cover various approaches to successful mordanting and dyeing of these plant-based fibers. \nThe class will use both immersion and printing techniques\, including mordant printing\, direct application of dyes\, mordant discharge\, and layering of color. Mordants will include both alum and iron and we will use tannins extensively. \nThe class will make a natural indigo vat and explore immersion dyeing\, color mixing\, and printing applications with indigo\, including indigo discharge and resists. \nEmphasis will be placed on experimentation and accurate record keeping. Each student will build a notebook of samples and processes for future reference and use.
