In this workshop\, Debbie will take students beyond the simple fold and clamp techniques. There will be a strong emphasis on working toward more detailed and intricate designs. Students will learn several different Arashi or pole wrapping techniques to achieve very unusual designs. Students will do itajime or fold and clamp\, but with dyeing and then moving the clamps and re-dyeing or itajime followed by arashi pole wrapping the same fabric. The stitching patterns will be as simple as Ori Nui done with simple basting style stitches to waves and circles and chevron effects. Students will learn how to pleat and then stitch cloth for the wonderful Katano designs. All dyeing will be done in organic indigo vats with no harsh chemicals. The final part of the class will focus on finishing fabrics to help with light fastness and wash fastness. Using rattan\, this useful rectangular basket is woven with a “filled” plaited base. Students will weave and shape the sides of their basket with a start and stop weaving technique. Two wide weavers will be incorporated to accept the Shaker Tape strap that will be used as the carrying handles (there will be discussion about replacing the Shaker Tape with a handwoven band strap). He simplified the rigid scientific concepts of color and stressed the importance of learning to depend upon one’s own sense of sight. His discoveries culminated in his classic treatise on color\, The Interaction of Color\, published in1963\, while he was teaching at Yale. Albers was obsessed with understanding the peculiarities of color\, referring to it as a relative sensation\, which he illustrated in thousands of paintings\, serigraphs and color studies based on the square\, created over a lifetime. His take-away message was that no color stands purely alone uninfluenced by its surroundings\, the appearance of a color at any given time and location is conditioned by many\, many factors. \nEach participant in this workshop will create a personal color reference journal using striking and visually opulent Color-aid coated papers in 314 swatches\, which include 24 hues\, dark shades\, light shades\, and 17 grays. \nColor work requires focus\, attention to detail\, and reflection.  It is important that attendees approach the building of exercises with precision. In this daylong workshop\, we will learn how to use a great wheel\, and experiment with different fiber selections and preparations for great wheel spinning. \nWe will look at examples of different great wheel designs\, learn how to adjust\, maintain and make simple repairs to great wheels\, and will learn how to recognize a great wheel that could still be used for spinning when one encounters it ‘in the wild.’ \nThis workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of handspinning\, but may also be of interest to new spinners.
