This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — the classes do not need to be taken in order. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. Upon completion of any one of these classes\, students may arrange to work in the studio individually\, when it is open\, for a use fee.  \nThere are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nThis workshop will cover the basics of working with powdered natural indigo extract to make and maintain a vat for long term use using ferrous sulfate as the reduction agent. Other natural vats\, using organic materials such as henna or fruit sugar will be discussed and demonstrated if there is interest. The advantage of the iron vat is that it is very stable\, so advantageous in a workshop setting. The essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Basic shibori techniques using stitching (mokume)\, pole wrapping (arashi)\, and clamping (itajime) will be taught. We will also explore ways to use clay paste resist (for painting and printing) and Japanese rice paste resist technique (katazome) with stencils. We will be working primarily with cellulose fiber (cotton\, linen etc.). Protein (silk\, wool\, etc.) will be discussed and samples shown. Cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \nThe indigo extract used in this workshop will be extract that is available commercially. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn how to properly mordant cloth in order to ensure good dye results and how to create a wide range of colors with natural dyes through the application of mordants on cloth. Students will first learn proper fiber preparation to ensure good dye results\, including the difference treatments for plant and animal fibers. Then\, students will learn the process of mordanting. For some reason\, this intimidates people\, but it shouldn’t—students will learn that the key is to know the range of mordant options and pair your chosen method with how you will apply the dye. This workshop will use only two mordants: alum and iron. Other metals can be used mordants\, but they can be unsafe and there are more sustainable options to create a full range of color. Students will explore mordants applied in hot and cold immersion baths\, mordants thickened and used for printing\, and mordants discharged with a citric acid solution for interesting effects. Then\, students will dye using three dye souces: fresh dye plant materials (due to the time of year of the workshop)\, dried flowers from the previous summer’s harvest\, and different concentrated extracts. Students will use these dyes in immersion baths and as thickened pastes for printing and painting. An indigo vat will be available for over-dyeing. In this workshop\, Debbie will take students beyond the simple fold and clamp techniques. There will be a strong emphasis on working toward more detailed and intricate designs. Students will learn several different Arashi or pole wrapping techniques to achieve very unusual designs. Students will do itajime or fold and clamp\, but with dyeing and then moving the clamps and re-dyeing or itajime followed by arashi pole wrapping the same fabric. The stitching patterns will be as simple as Ori Nui done with simple basting style stitches to waves and circles and chevron effects. Students will learn how to pleat and then stitch cloth for the wonderful Katano designs. All dyeing will be done in organic indigo vats with no harsh chemicals. The final part of the class will focus on finishing fabrics to help with light fastness and wash fastness.
