SUMMARY:Rice Paste Resist
DESCRIPTION:Rice Paste Resist\n \n \n \n \n \n Berkley Heath \n \n \n \n \n \n Monday\, July 25th – Friday\, July 29th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Katazome is an ancient Japanese printmaking technique created using sticky rice flour paste as a resist in an indigo vat. In this workshop\, students will learn the traditional methods of creating these prints and present some modern techniques that can be used at home or a studio. We will cover natural indigo vat-making and the chemistry involved\, as well as fabric preparation\, preparing a printing surface\, stencil carving\, rice paste making and application\, and post-dye fabric treatment. Students will take some time to plan out their printed designs in one or many layers\, creating uniquely patterned cloth in shades of indigo blue and white. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlanning a stenciled resist design\nStencil carving and material options\nFabric preparation\nMaking a printing pad\nMaking shin-shi \nNatural indigo vat making\, including understanding chemistry and on-going maintenance\nMaking and applying rice paste\nBest practices for dyeing rice paste-printed pieces in an indigo vat\nPost-dyeing fabric treatment and curing\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Berkley Heath \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials and supplies will be provided\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$40.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
