All students in the course will work with a traditional coal forge. Students will begin with an introduction to body mechanics and safety. Once in the studio\, students will learn to start and manage a coal-fired forge. Attention will be given to how to maximize draft\, prepare and manage the coal-fuel\, and distinguish the right temperature for various forge processes. Hammering techniques will be demonstrated. As the workshop progresses\, different forging techniques will be covered including drawing out\, upsetting\, punching\, slitting\, drifting\, bending\, and forge welding. Students will then apply these skills to create a gate hook\, trivet\, and chisel. If time allows\, additional projects can be explored\, such as a fire poker or toasting fork. DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing Tool Making and Welding\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Garry Kalajian \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Saturday\, October 22nd – Sunday\, October 23rd \n8:00am – 4:00pm \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Workshop Overview\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				In this two-day workshop\, students will learn to make the essential tools needed for a blacksmith shop\, which includes tongs\, punches and chisels\, a forge poker\, and a flux spoon. Students will begin with instruction on how to maintain a coal fire and a discussion on basic metallurgy with the application to heat treating operations such as annealing\, normalizing\, hardening\, and tempering tool steel. Students will be provided “known alloys” to use in tool making but are welcome to bring in and experiment with scrap steel\, such a coil spring or a hay rake tine.
