SUMMARY:Autumn Ink Making with Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Ink Making with Natural Dyes\n \n \n \n \n \n Berkley Heath \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, October 15th- Sunday\, October 16th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this workshop\, students will take the weekend to wander through the fall landscape\, exploring the seasonal natural ink palette that surrounds us. We’ll take time to observe subtle patterns in nature as we forage for color\, seeing through the lens of the naturalist ink maker. Traditional ink making plant materials\, such as buckthorn berries and oak galls\, ground our color palette with durable bold tones\, while pokeweed and wild grape lend an ephemeral splash of brilliance. Beyond specific ink recipes\, students will gain an understanding of the general process for making natural dye-based inks. We will explore tannins in particular\, a family of plant chemicals responsible for many long-lasting dyes and inks\, including the classic indelible dark writing ink. Students will have a chance to experiment with the colors we create\, using various papers\, writing utensils\, and modifiers. Everyone will bring home a set of inks! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nA general process for how to make and use any natural dye-based ink\nLearn specific recipes for making traditional inks\nIdentify plant materials for ink making\nIdentify tannin sources in the landscape\nUse binders to affect the nature of the ink\nBest practices for storage of natural inks\nBest practices for kitchen ink-making\nDevelop an understanding of ink modifiers and how to use them toachieve various effects\nMake hardwood ash lye\nMake a reed dip pen from foraged materials\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Berkley Heath \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nA notebook\npens/pencils\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$15.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Fall Session
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Fall Session\n \n \n \n \n \n Cathy Crooker \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday October 15th\, 2022 \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Throughout most of human history we relied on the skills of a handful of talented spinners to make every thread for every piece of clothing\, every flour sack\, every sail on every ship. Spinning fibers into thread or yarn is one of the oldest human skills. Today\, we practice hand spinning for the joy it brings us through the creation of something beautiful and useful\, through the fun of playing with various textures and colors\, and for the relaxation of the rhythm when we sit at the wheel. \nIn this workshop\, students will enter the world of hand spinning and explore the joy of making your own yarn in this engaging\, fast-paced class. Cathy will introduce you to both wheel and drop-spindle spinning\, give you an overview of fiber prep tools\, such as the drum carder\, and give you plenty of hands-on practice and coaching to launch your spinning journey. By the end of the day you will go home with your first handspun yarn and be on your way to years of spinning enjoyment! \nThis workshop will be offered in the spring and fall of 2022.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nHow to set up and manage your wheel\nThe basics of fiber prep and selection\nHow to spin a singles yarn\nHow to ply two singles to make a finished yarn\nThe basics of spinning on a drop spindle\nPractice fiber blending on a drum carder\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Catherine Crooker \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nYour own spinning wheel in good working order if you have one\nA limited number of loaner wheels may be available upon request\nStudents are also invited to bring fiber they are curious to try spinning\, but not required\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$15.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Traditional Felt Making with Raw Wool Processing
DESCRIPTION:Traditional Felt Making with Raw Wool Processing\n \n \n \n \n \n Prin Van Gulden \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, October 8th – Sunday\, October 9th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this workshop\, students will learn the process of wet felting. Wet felting is a magical way to turn loose wool fibers into fabric without spinning\, knitting or weaving. It is method employed in everything from making hats\, slippers and warm boots to the felt homes of Central Asia. This ancient technique differs from “needle felting” and some other felting techniques in that wet felting relies only on the nature of the fibers\, a little soap & water\, and some elbow grease to make a beautiful rugged fabric. \nStudents will make bags using a resist method of felting that is applicable to all kinds of projects. Prin will discuss other felting methods and traditions of the craft while students work on projects. \nStudents will also learn about the process of preparing wool for feltmaking. For this workshop students will use carefully prepared fiber for projects\, but will learn how to get from raw wool in all its messy glory to clean prepped fiber ready for feltmaking! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nSupported wet felting\nUsing a resist in feltmaking\nCarding wool (a preparation for felting\, spinning & other wool crafts)\nWashing wool\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Prin Van Gulden \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll supplies and materials will be provided\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$30.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Foraging for Color\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, September 29th – Saturday\, October 1st  \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n				 The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman.  This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes.  Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn to use foraged wild materials for use in the dye pot. On the first day of class\, students will learn the proper fiber preparation and mordanting for cellulose and protein fibers with both alum and iron. Protein (yarn) and cloth samples will be dyed in these baths. The class will then go outdoors to collect dye materials. At this time of year there\, there will be many materials available for collection. Students will collect leaves from trees\, nuts\, bark\, wildflowers\, roots and lichen. The class will then return to the studio with their collected dye treasures to photograph\, identify\, and prepare the material for dyeing. Most collected material will require an overnight soak before being made into a bath. Possibilities for modifying colors by changing pH\, adding iron\, and over-dyeing with indigo will be explored. \nStudents should be prepared to walk the grounds of Sanborn Mills Farm\, including woods paths\, trails\, and fields.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFiber preparation: scouring for cellulose and protein\nIdentifying dye materials in the field\nExploring\, collecting\, and processing foraged dye material\nMordanting with alum and iron\nMaking samples of dye colors on different fibers for record keeping\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents should dress and prepare for walking outside in the woods\, trails\, and fields\nGardening gloves and clippers\nStudents are welcome to bring dye stuffs with them that they have collected on their own for the group to try\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nThis is truly a class about color! In this workshop\, students will dye yarn as skeins or in wound warps for weaving. Students use immersion baths to dye the fiber all one color and make dyes into thickened paints for painting skeins and warps different colors. It is rare\, in introductory dye classes\, to ever get to the stage of mixing colors and inventing new combinations. In this workshop\, students will explore this process\, both in the dye baths and for the paints. At the time of the workshop\, plants will be ready to use for dyeing from the Sanborn Mills Farm dye garden. Students will also use concentrated dye extracts to make into stock solutions for mixing paints. An indigo vat will be available for over-dyeing the mordant dye colors to get deep purples\, greens and browns. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFiber preparation: scouring for cellulose and protein\nPreparing skeins and warps for dyeing with proper tying\nMordanting with alum and iron\nMaking stock solutions from concentrated dye extracts\nUsing dye extracts in immersion baths and as thickened paints\nPainting\, or space dyeing\, skeins and warps with different colors\nSteaming the painted yarn to fix the dye\nUsing fresh and dried plant materials from the dye garden in immersion baths\nOver-dyeing with indigo to achieve purples\, greens and browns\nShifting colors by modifying ph and using iron post-baths\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be provided. SUMMARY:Harvest Baskets in Willow-FULL
DESCRIPTION:Harvest Baskets in Willow: An Introduction to Round Stake and Strand Willow Weaving\n \n \n \n \n \n Jes Clark \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, September 8th- Friday\, September 9th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this workshop\, students learn and practice traditional weaving techniques while creating beautiful and functional harvesting baskets. Students will use an innately colorful selection of willows cultivated at Sanborn Mills and Willow Vale Farms. Students will also learn about the cultivation and processing of this historically important natural material. Our baskets will be built from a round base with weaves mostly in the European tradition\, including pairing\, waling\, randing and woven borders. Every student’s basket will be different! This class is suitable for beginners wanting to learn a base of weaving knowledge or intermediate weavers looking to improve skills and control. Care and use of finished pieces will be discussed in class. \nWillow is a stronger more tension-y material than many other basketry materials\, strong hands are recommended for this course.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAn introduction to several weaving techniques/patterns:\n\nPairing/reverse pairing\nThree-rod wale and four-rod wale\nA variety of “side weaves” including French randing\, English randing\, slewing\, packing\, and zig-zag weave\nWoven rod borders\n\n\nLearning the “feel” of weaving with willow\, a unique material in the US\nLearning the use of willow weaving specific tools: Bodkin\, Rapping Iron\, Fid\, Shaping ties and hoops\, Clippers in a willow context\nIdentifying willow in weaving and learning the growth/processing of willow for weaving\nCreating functional and beautiful 3D shapes\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Jes Clark \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be supplied\nStudents may bring the following tools if they already have them: bodkin\, high-quality sharp pruners (Felco or similar)\, rapping iron\, fid\, conditioning tool (a perfect cylinder with no seams\, appx 3” in diameter\, usually a reusable water bottle/thermos or spray can)\, 2-4lb weights\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$25.00 – $50.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. Each culture has a unique approach to fashioning garlands\, but all cultures value their beauty and make them with care and skill. \nCome join fiber artist Lynn Martin Graton and learn two basic techniques to create fresh garlands for your seasonal celebrations\, weddings\, birthdays and more. The morning session will focus on using a braiding technique with freshly gathered ferns.  The afternoon session will focus on arranging flowers and greens on a core of raffia using a wrapping technique.  \nA selection of ferns and flowers will be provided\, but students are encouraged to bring more to add to the fun.  \nThe most appropriate flowers for this workshop are small with sturdy petals.They include: status\, straw flowers\, alstroemeria\, small chrysanthemums\, small rudbeckia\, miniature roses\, small marigolds\, baby’s breath\, leather leaf ferns\, wildflowers such as Goldenrod and other sturdy greens that can be separated into smaller parts.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nIncorporating fresh materials into a stable\, uniform braid\nIncorporating fresh materials into a stable\, uniform core using a wrapping technique\nDiscussions will focus on: \n\nThe different ways that cultures value and utilize fresh garlands for celebrations\nCultivating a garden for garlands\nResponsible harvesting of natural materials\nSensitivity to varying color and texture using fresh materials\nConsideration of best use of materials for specific occasions\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Lynn Martin Graton \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nSmall clippers\nSmall spray bottle for water\nA container or basket to take garlands home\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n$15.00 – $25.00 payable at time of workshop \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. The core of this workshop will cover various approaches to successful mordanting and dyeing of these plant-based fibers. \nThe class will use both immersion and printing techniques\, including mordant printing\, direct application of dyes\, mordant discharge\, and layering of color. Mordants will include both alum and iron and we will use tannins extensively. \nThe class will make a natural indigo vat and explore immersion dyeing\, color mixing\, and printing applications with indigo\, including indigo discharge and resists. \nEmphasis will be placed on experimentation and accurate record keeping. Each student will build a notebook of samples and processes for future reference and use. Small individual projects may be dyed at the end of the week as time permits. \nThis class will stand on its’ own or can be combined with Natural Dye: A Focus on Protein Fibers for a more comprehensive overview of a natural dye practice. \nAll levels of experience welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nApplication of mordants to cellulose for immersion dyeing\nThe role of tannins\nMordants for printing\nDirect application of dye for printing\nMordant discharge\nIndigo vats and dyeing\nIndigo printing\nIndigo discharge\nColor mixing and shading\nRecord keeping\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Catharine Ellis  \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nA couple of old towels\nA loose-leaf binder\nSmall notebook for taking notes\nDyes and protein textiles for class experiments will be provided for the entire class but you many want to bring small samples (fibers\, yarns\, or fabrics) that are typical of your own studio work for experimenting\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$75.00-$100.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. Purchased dyestuffs and extracts will be used as well as some locally grown plants. There will be discussion on dye selection and methods of testing dyes for longevity. \nStudents will work with both mordant dyes and natural dyes that can be treated as acid dyes without the use of mordants. There will also be experiments with middle mordanting on silk\, color mixing\, and color gradations. A natural indigo vat will be used to complete the palette of color. \nEmphasis will be placed on experimentation\, process\, and accurate record keeping. Each student will build a notebook of samples and processes for future reference and use. Small individual projects may be dyed at the end of the week if time permits. \nThe workshop is complete on its own or can be combined with Natural Dye: A Focus on Cellulose Fibers and Printing for a more comprehensive overview of the natural dye practice. \nAll levels of experience welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMordanting\nImmersion dyeing\nUsing dyes without mordants\npH control\nDye selection\nIndigo vats and dyeing\nColor mixing and shading\nCross dyeing\nRecord Keeping\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Catharine Ellis  \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A couple of old towels\nA loose-leaf binder\nSmall notebook for taking notesDyes and protein textiles for class experiments will be provided for the entire class but you many want to bring small samples (fibers\, yarns\, or fabrics) that are typical of your own studio work for experimenting\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$75.00 – $100.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Harvesting Color from the Dye Garden\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, August 3rd- Friday\, August 5th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this workshop\, students will learn the varieties of natural dye plants that grow successfully in our region\, harvest and process plants used for natural dyes from the Sanborn Mills Farm dye garden\, and create dye baths with the fresh plant material to dye protein and cellulose fibers. The first day of this class will cover proper fiber preparation and mordanting for cellulose and protein fibers with both alum and iron. Students will then dye the yarn and cloth samples in these dye baths. In the afternoon\, students will go to the dye garden to harvest several kinds of flowers to use in dye baths such as weld\, coreopsis\, calendula\, marigold\, rudbeckia\, and cosmos. The dye plants will then soak overnight to be used the next day in dye baths. Students will also dig madder root and prepare the root to be used for dyeing. Finally\, students will pick indigo leaves and extract the pigment using the water extraction method. This is a two-day process that will result in a dark blue “pudding” that can be used for a small dye vat. If there is time\, the class may also make dye baths from dried plant materials from the 2021 harvest\, in order to compare the end results from fresh and dried plants \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFiber preparation: scouring for cellulose and protein\nIdentifying dye materials in the garden that can grow in our region\nMordanting fibers with alum and iron\nMaking dye baths from fresh dye materials: flowers\, leaves\, & roots\nExtracting indigo pigment from fresh indigo leaves: Persicaria tinctoria\nMaking samples of dye colors on different fibers for record-keeping\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Natural Dye Basics: Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, July 7th- Saturday\, July 9th  \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn to dye with fresh indigo leaves and the water extraction method for extracting indigo pigment from freshly harvested plants. There are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Polygonum or Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nStudents will first work with fresh indigo harvested from the dye garden at Sanborn Mills Farm. Using fresh leaves\, ice cubes\, and a blender\, students will dye silk scarves immediately for a lovely blue. Students can experiment with multiple batches to deepen the color.  \nStudents will then use the water extraction process to extract pigment from freshly harvested indigo leaves. In this two-day process\, students will soak\, aerate\, precipitate\, and filter indigo. Then\, students will use this pigment to make an indigo vat for dyeing protein and cellulose. \nThe essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Silk scarves and cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \n            \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n\nHow to use fresh leaf indigo to quickly dye protein fibers\nHow to extract indigo pigment from fresh indigo leaves\nHow to make a vat using the extracted pigment\nHow to properly use and maintain the vat\nFiber preparation: scouring cloth for best results\nFinishing the cloth after dyeing: neutralizing\, curing\, and washing\nOver-dyeing other colors to make green\, purple\, and brown\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be provided\nStudents may bring 1 or 2 pieces of their own clothing for embellishment\, over-dyeing\, or up-cycling\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\nAlso available for purchase at time of workshop are Bandanas for $2.00 and T-shirts for $5.00\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Secrets of the Great Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Secrets of the Great Wheel\n \n \n \n \n \n Andrea Myklebust \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, June 18th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Secrets of the Great Wheel is part of our Flax to Linen mini series\, which teaches students to grow\, process\, and spin flax to linen\, taught by Andrea Myklebust.  \nThe great wheel\, also known as the walking wheel\, spindle wheel\, or wool wheel\, was a common textile tool in New England prior to the industrial revolution and into the 19th century\, but few hand spinners know how to use them today. In this daylong workshop\, we will learn how to use a great wheel\, and experiment with different fiber selections and preparations for great wheel spinning. \nWe will look at examples of different great wheel designs\, learn how to adjust\, maintain and make simple repairs to great wheels\, and will learn how to recognize a great wheel that could still be used for spinning when one encounters it ‘in the wild.’ \nThis workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of handspinning\, but may also be of interest to new spinners. If you do not have prior spinning experience\, we suggest you also sign up for the Introduction to Handspinning workshop on June 16th & 17th. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n\nA hands-on grounding of the techniques using a great wheel to spin a woolen yarn\nHow to select\, repair\, and maintain a great wheel of their own\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n INSTRUCTOR\n \n \n \n \n \n Andrea Myklebust \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Spring Session
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Spring Session\n \n \n \n \n \n Cathy Crooker \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday May 21st\, 2022 \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Throughout most of human history we relied on the skills of a handful of talented spinners to make every thread for every piece of clothing\, every flour sack\, every sail on every ship. SUMMARY:Natural Dye Basics: Mordant Dyes on Cloth
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Mordant Dyes on Cloth\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, May 12th – Saturday\, May 14th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview:\n \n \n \n \n \n The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one\, or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn how to properly mordant cloth in order to ensure good dye results and how to create a wide range of colors with natural dyes through the application of mordants on cloth. Students will first learn proper fiber preparation to ensure good dye results\, including the difference treatments for plant and animal fibers. Then\, students will learn the process of mordanting. For some reason\, this intimidates people\, but it shouldn’t—students will learn that the key is to know the range of mordant options and pair your chosen method with how you will apply the dye. This workshop will use only two mordants: alum and iron. Other metals can be used mordants\, but they can be unsafe and there are more sustainable options to create a full range of color. Students will explore mordants applied in hot and cold immersion baths\, mordants thickened and used for printing\, and mordants discharged with a citric acid solution for interesting effects. Then\, students will dye using three dye souces: fresh dye plant materials (due to the time of year of the workshop)\, dried flowers from the previous summer’s harvest\, and different concentrated extracts. Students will use these dyes in immersion baths and as thickened pastes for printing and painting. An indigo vat will be available for over-dyeing. Finishing techniques for steaming and cleaning will end the class. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFiber preparation: scouring for cellulose and protein\nMordanting in hot and cold immersion baths with alum and iron\nPrinting on cloth with thickened mordants\nUsing concentrated dye extracts in immersion baths and as thickened paints\nUsing fresh and dried plant materials from the garden and forest\nMaking samples of dye colors on different fibers for record keeping\nDischarging mordants\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be provided\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
