SUMMARY:Explorations in Vessel Making with Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Explorations in Vessel Making with Fiber \n \n \n \n \n \n Dayna Talbot \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, September 8 – Friday\, September 9 \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this two-day workshop\, students will learn two different techniques to create woven sculptural vessels using resists. Students will explore the vessel form through experimentation and invention. \nOn the first\, day\, students will explore the technique of creating sculptural wet felted vessels. Through wet felting techniques\, students will learn to create a sphere or round form and transform it into a vessel\, pod or bowl. Using the ancient process of wet felting\, wool can be transformed into many things. Our focus will be creating a 3D form using a flat circle or oval resist. We will create a using wool roving\, soap and water\, and a resist. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous felt making experience. \nOn the second day\, students will explore the technique of random weaving. It’s not your traditional basket weaving! We will be experimenting with non-traditional techniques to create sculptural forms\, using various material from paper rush to plant material. Student swill be encouraged to use whatever material is suitable to create the desired form\, ex: bowls\, bag of rice\, crumpled paper bound with sticky tape. This is a workshop for those who like exploration and invention. This technique is mostly used to explore form and the unique qualities of the materials used. What you envision in the beginning may not be what comes to fruition but it will be a fun\, meditative process that can open up new ideas and avenues. Embellishment can include yarns\, raffia and colored electrical wire. We will start small and if time permits\, students may choose to start another piece. Everyone will leave with a woven sculptural form\, the skills to create more work in the future\, and the inspiration to explore. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n Wet felted Vessels \n\nBasic wet felting techniques\nHow to layout fibers\nUsing a resist learn to take a flat surface and turn it into a 3D form\nHeal a cut edge\nSurface design/embellisment\nResources for wet felting and sculptural fiber\n\nRandom Weaving \n\nExploration of fiber to create sculptural forms\nMould making for form/vessel making\nCreate a framwork for support of the weaving\nSurface Design\nResources for Random weave and explorations in fiber\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Dayna Talbot \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n2 old towels\nQuart container or small bucket\nA pair of small\, sharp scissors\nWaterproof bag for carrying wet towels home\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$20.00 – $40.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Natural Dye: A Focus on Cellulose Fibers and Printing-FULL
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye: A Focus on Cellulose Fibers and Printing\n \n \n \n \n \n Catharine Ellis  \n \n \n \n \n \n Monday August 15th- Friday\, August 19th \n9:00 am- 5:00 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Natural dyers often find cellulose fibers (cotton\, linen\, ramie\, Tencel\, etc.) more challenging to dye with natural colorants than protein fibers. The core of this workshop will cover various approaches to successful mordanting and dyeing of these plant-based fibers. \nThe class will use both immersion and printing techniques\, including mordant printing\, direct application of dyes\, mordant discharge\, and layering of color. Mordants will include both alum and iron and we will use tannins extensively. \nThe class will make a natural indigo vat and explore immersion dyeing\, color mixing\, and printing applications with indigo\, including indigo discharge and resists. \nEmphasis will be placed on experimentation and accurate record keeping. Each student will build a notebook of samples and processes for future reference and use. Small individual projects may be dyed at the end of the week as time permits. \nThis class will stand on its’ own or can be combined with Natural Dye: A Focus on Protein Fibers for a more comprehensive overview of a natural dye practice. \nAll levels of experience welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nApplication of mordants to cellulose for immersion dyeing\nThe role of tannins\nMordants for printing\nDirect application of dye for printing\nMordant discharge\nIndigo vats and dyeing\nIndigo printing\nIndigo discharge\nColor mixing and shading\nRecord keeping\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Catharine Ellis  \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nA couple of old towels\nA loose-leaf binder\nSmall notebook for taking notes\nDyes and protein textiles for class experiments will be provided for the entire class but you many want to bring small samples (fibers\, yarns\, or fabrics) that are typical of your own studio work for experimenting\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$75.00-$100.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. DESCRIPTION:Indigo Shibori Dyeing from Itajime\, Arashi\, Nui\, Kumo and Beyond\n \n \n \n \n \n Debbie Maddy \n \n \n \n \n \n May 30\, 2022 – June 3\, 2022 \n9:00 – 5:00\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n This workshop is open to all levels of indigo dyers. In this workshop\, Debbie will take students beyond the simple fold and clamp techniques. There will be a strong emphasis on working toward more detailed and intricate designs. Students will learn several different Arashi or pole wrapping techniques to achieve very unusual designs. Students will do itajime or fold and clamp\, but with dyeing and then moving the clamps and re-dyeing or itajime followed by arashi pole wrapping the same fabric. The stitching patterns will be as simple as Ori Nui done with simple basting style stitches to waves and circles and chevron effects. Students will learn how to pleat and then stitch cloth for the wonderful Katano designs. All dyeing will be done in organic indigo vats with no harsh chemicals. The final part of the class will focus on finishing fabrics to help with light fastness and wash fastness. All of the fabrics can be used for garments\, quilts\, scarves\, and or home decor. \nThere will be a separate class following this one if the students want to make a quilt with their newly dyed or previously dyed fabrics.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nMaking an organic indigo vat\nMaintaining an organic indigo vat\nHow to pre-treat fabrics to dye\nStitching\, folding\, and wrapping for precision\nAdvanced variations of techniques covered\nFinal finishing of fabrics\nHaving fun with experimentation – What would happen if I do this?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n INSTRUCTOR\n \n \n \n \n \n Debbie Maddy \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents should wear clothes and shoes that they do not mind being blue\nStudents may bring fabric to dye but it must be prepared for dyeing\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$25.00-$30.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. In this course\, students will learn core skills of rug hooking and make a 16” x 16” piece. Designs will utilize a “hit and miss” approach to color. With the skills learned in this course\, students would be able to progress to pieces involving more complex designs and color shading in the future. Use your finished piece as a wall hanging\, pillow\, or chair pad! \nThe workshop fee includes a kit with a pattern\, materials\, and a rug hook. Students will be asked to bring a small pair of scissors and a 12” quilting hoop. If students do not have a quilting hoop\, one can be pre-ordered from the teacher for $28. Please contact Molly Bolick at molly@sanbornmills.org to pre-order. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFundamentals of rug hooking\n“Hit and miss” approach to using color\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Pam Bartlett \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nA small pair of scissors\n12” quilting hoop. SUMMARY:Natural Dye Basics: Natural Indigo Vats with Extract
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Natural Indigo Vats with Extract\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, May 5th – Saturday\, May 7th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — the classes do not need to be taken in order. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. Upon completion of any one of these classes\, students may arrange to work in the studio individually\, when it is open\, for a use fee.  \nThere are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nThis workshop will cover the basics of working with powdered natural indigo extract to make and maintain a vat for long term use using ferrous sulfate as the reduction agent. Other natural vats\, using organic materials such as henna or fruit sugar will be discussed and demonstrated if there is interest. The advantage of the iron vat is that it is very stable\, so advantageous in a workshop setting. The essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Basic shibori techniques using stitching (mokume)\, pole wrapping (arashi)\, and clamping (itajime) will be taught. We will also explore ways to use clay paste resist (for painting and printing) and Japanese rice paste resist technique (katazome) with stencils. We will be working primarily with cellulose fiber (cotton\, linen etc.). Protein (silk\, wool\, etc.) will be discussed and samples shown. Cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \nThe indigo extract used in this workshop will be extract that is available commercially. To learn how to extract indigotin pigment from fresh plants and process your own extract\, see our workshop Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction in the Natural Dye Basics series.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nHow to make a natural indigo vat with indigo extract powder and ferrous sulfate as the reducing agent\n How to properly use and maintain the vat\nFiber preparation: scouring cloth for best results\nFinishing the cloth after dyeing: neutralizing\, curing\, and washing\n Three resist techniques: shibori\, clay resist\, and rice paste resist\nOver-dyeing indigo with other colors to make green\, purple\, and brown\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring 1 or 2 pieces of their own clothing for embellishment\, over-dyeing or up-cycling\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\nBandanas $2.00\nT-shirts $5.00\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
