SUMMARY:Natural Dye Basics: Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, July 7th- Saturday\, July 9th  \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn to dye with fresh indigo leaves and the water extraction method for extracting indigo pigment from freshly harvested plants. There are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Polygonum or Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nStudents will first work with fresh indigo harvested from the dye garden at Sanborn Mills Farm. Using fresh leaves\, ice cubes\, and a blender\, students will dye silk scarves immediately for a lovely blue. Students can experiment with multiple batches to deepen the color.  \nStudents will then use the water extraction process to extract pigment from freshly harvested indigo leaves. In this two-day process\, students will soak\, aerate\, precipitate\, and filter indigo. Then\, students will use this pigment to make an indigo vat for dyeing protein and cellulose. \nThe essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Silk scarves and cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \n            \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n\nHow to use fresh leaf indigo to quickly dye protein fibers\nHow to extract indigo pigment from fresh indigo leaves\nHow to make a vat using the extracted pigment\nHow to properly use and maintain the vat\nFiber preparation: scouring cloth for best results\nFinishing the cloth after dyeing: neutralizing\, curing\, and washing\nOver-dyeing other colors to make green\, purple\, and brown\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be provided\nStudents may bring 1 or 2 pieces of their own clothing for embellishment\, over-dyeing\, or up-cycling\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\nAlso available for purchase at time of workshop are Bandanas for $2.00 and T-shirts for $5.00\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Secrets of the Great Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Secrets of the Great Wheel\n \n \n \n \n \n Andrea Myklebust \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, June 18th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Secrets of the Great Wheel is part of our Flax to Linen mini series\, which teaches students to grow\, process\, and spin flax to linen\, taught by Andrea Myklebust.  \nThe great wheel\, also known as the walking wheel\, spindle wheel\, or wool wheel\, was a common textile tool in New England prior to the industrial revolution and into the 19th century\, but few hand spinners know how to use them today. In this daylong workshop\, we will learn how to use a great wheel\, and experiment with different fiber selections and preparations for great wheel spinning. \nWe will look at examples of different great wheel designs\, learn how to adjust\, maintain and make simple repairs to great wheels\, and will learn how to recognize a great wheel that could still be used for spinning when one encounters it ‘in the wild.’ \nThis workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic understanding of handspinning\, but may also be of interest to new spinners. If you do not have prior spinning experience\, we suggest you also sign up for the Introduction to Handspinning workshop on June 16th & 17th. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n				  \n\nA hands-on grounding of the techniques using a great wheel to spin a woolen yarn\nHow to select\, repair\, and maintain a great wheel of their own\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n INSTRUCTOR\n \n \n \n \n \n Andrea Myklebust \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:The Spirit of Art: Color
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Art: Color \n \n \n \n \n \n Mary Zicafoose \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday\, June 17th- Sunday\, June 19th \n9:00 am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n This intensive color study workshop is an opportunity to deepen your understanding and intuitive use of color through a selection of 14 progressive self-paced studies\, based on the lifelong observations and teachings of the famed Bauhaus artist & colorist Josef Albers. \nAlbers has been credited with revolutionizing contemporary artists assessment of color. He simplified the rigid scientific concepts of color and stressed the importance of learning to depend upon one’s own sense of sight. His discoveries culminated in his classic treatise on color\, The Interaction of Color\, published in1963\, while he was teaching at Yale. Albers was obsessed with understanding the peculiarities of color\, referring to it as a relative sensation\, which he illustrated in thousands of paintings\, serigraphs and color studies based on the square\, created over a lifetime. His take-away message was that no color stands purely alone uninfluenced by its surroundings\, the appearance of a color at any given time and location is conditioned by many\, many factors. \nEach participant in this workshop will create a personal color reference journal using striking and visually opulent Color-aid coated papers in 314 swatches\, which include 24 hues\, dark shades\, light shades\, and 17 grays. \nColor work requires focus\, attention to detail\, and reflection.  It is important that attendees approach the building of exercises with precision. Color differentiations will be seen and understood more clearly if individuals are prepared to work thoughtfully and with care. \nThis workshop is an inspiring & unusual opportunity to refine your color skills specifically as they apply to your art and your personal point of view. An important part of the class experience is the collective sharing of the discoveries revealed by the studies. Color exercises that specifically relate to fibers and handweaving will also be included. \n Need some inspiration? You may join the waitlist or check out Wendy’s Field Basket class on September 17th\, 2022. \n \n \n \n \n \n In this workshop\, students will make a Carry-All Basket that you can find a use for every day\, from shopping trips to toting supplies to fetching garden goods and to all of your needs in between. Using rattan\, this useful rectangular basket is woven with a “filled” plaited base. Students will weave and shape the sides of their basket with a start and stop weaving technique. Two wide weavers will be incorporated to accept the Shaker Tape strap that will be used as the carrying handles (there will be discussion about replacing the Shaker Tape with a handwoven band strap). Rim fitting\, scarfing and lashing will also be taught. \nThe approximate size of your Carry-All Basket is 16” long x 10” high x 6” wide. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques:\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nUse rattan in basketry\nCreate a filled plaited base\nUse Start and stop weaving technique\nIncorporate Wide weavers\nLearn rim fitting\, scarfing\, and lashing\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n INSTRUCTOR\n \n \n \n \n \n Wendy Jensen \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be supplied\nStudents may bring a pen and notebook for note taking\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. In this workshop\, Debbie will take students beyond the simple fold and clamp techniques. There will be a strong emphasis on working toward more detailed and intricate designs. Students will learn several different Arashi or pole wrapping techniques to achieve very unusual designs. Students will do itajime or fold and clamp\, but with dyeing and then moving the clamps and re-dyeing or itajime followed by arashi pole wrapping the same fabric. The stitching patterns will be as simple as Ori Nui done with simple basting style stitches to waves and circles and chevron effects. Students will learn how to pleat and then stitch cloth for the wonderful Katano designs. All dyeing will be done in organic indigo vats with no harsh chemicals. The final part of the class will focus on finishing fabrics to help with light fastness and wash fastness. All of the fabrics can be used for garments\, quilts\, scarves\, and or home decor. \nThere will be a separate class following this one if the students want to make a quilt with their newly dyed or previously dyed fabrics.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nMaking an organic indigo vat\nMaintaining an organic indigo vat\nHow to pre-treat fabrics to dye\nStitching\, folding\, and wrapping for precision\nAdvanced variations of techniques covered\nFinal finishing of fabrics\nHaving fun with experimentation – What would happen if I do this?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n INSTRUCTOR\n \n \n \n \n \n Debbie Maddy \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents should wear clothes and shoes that they do not mind being blue\nStudents may bring fabric to dye but it must be prepared for dyeing\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$25.00-$30.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. In this course\, students will learn core skills of rug hooking and make a 16” x 16” piece. Designs will utilize a “hit and miss” approach to color. With the skills learned in this course\, students would be able to progress to pieces involving more complex designs and color shading in the future. Use your finished piece as a wall hanging\, pillow\, or chair pad! \nThe workshop fee includes a kit with a pattern\, materials\, and a rug hook. Students will be asked to bring a small pair of scissors and a 12” quilting hoop. If students do not have a quilting hoop\, one can be pre-ordered from the teacher for $28. SUMMARY:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Spring Session
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Spinning on a Spinning Wheel-Spring Session\n \n \n \n \n \n Cathy Crooker \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday May 21st\, 2022 \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Throughout most of human history we relied on the skills of a handful of talented spinners to make every thread for every piece of clothing\, every flour sack\, every sail on every ship. Spinning fibers into thread or yarn is one of the oldest human skills. Today\, we practice hand spinning for the joy it brings us through the creation of something beautiful and useful\, through the fun of playing with various textures and colors\, and for the relaxation of the rhythm when we sit at the wheel. \nIn this workshop\, students will enter the world of hand spinning and explore the joy of making your own yarn in this engaging\, fast-paced class. Cathy will introduce you to both wheel and drop-spindle spinning\, give you an overview of fiber prep tools\, such as the drum carder\, and give you plenty of hands-on practice and coaching to launch your spinning journey. By the end of the day you will go home with your first handspun yarn and be on your way to years of spinning enjoyment! \nThis workshop will be offered in the spring and fall of 2022.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nHow to set up and manage your wheel\nThe basics of fiber prep and selection\nHow to spin a singles yarn\nHow to ply two singles to make a finished yarn\nThe basics of spinning on a drop spindle\nPractice fiber blending on a drum carder\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Catherine Crooker \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nYour own spinning wheel in good working order if you have one\nA limited number of loaner wheels may be available upon request\nStudents are also invited to bring fiber they are curious to try spinning\, but not required\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$15.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — take one\, or take them all! Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn how to properly mordant cloth in order to ensure good dye results and how to create a wide range of colors with natural dyes through the application of mordants on cloth. Students will first learn proper fiber preparation to ensure good dye results\, including the difference treatments for plant and animal fibers. Then\, students will learn the process of mordanting. For some reason\, this intimidates people\, but it shouldn’t—students will learn that the key is to know the range of mordant options and pair your chosen method with how you will apply the dye. This workshop will use only two mordants: alum and iron. Other metals can be used mordants\, but they can be unsafe and there are more sustainable options to create a full range of color. Students will explore mordants applied in hot and cold immersion baths\, mordants thickened and used for printing\, and mordants discharged with a citric acid solution for interesting effects. Then\, students will dye using three dye souces: fresh dye plant materials (due to the time of year of the workshop)\, dried flowers from the previous summer’s harvest\, and different concentrated extracts. Students will use these dyes in immersion baths and as thickened pastes for printing and painting. An indigo vat will be available for over-dyeing. Finishing techniques for steaming and cleaning will end the class. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nFiber preparation: scouring for cellulose and protein\nMordanting in hot and cold immersion baths with alum and iron\nPrinting on cloth with thickened mordants\nUsing concentrated dye extracts in immersion baths and as thickened paints\nUsing fresh and dried plant materials from the garden and forest\nMaking samples of dye colors on different fibers for record keeping\nDischarging mordants\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be provided\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Natural Dye Basics: Natural Indigo Vats with Extract
DESCRIPTION:Natural Dye Basics: Natural Indigo Vats with Extract\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, May 5th – Saturday\, May 7th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n The Natural Dye Basics workshop series at Sanborn Mills Farm is taught by our lead teacher\, Sara Goodman. This series of 5 classes are an introduction to the colorful world of natural dyes. Each class stands alone — the classes do not need to be taken in order. Each class will include the basics of proper fiber preparation as well as an orientation to the studio’s procedures and practices. Upon completion of any one of these classes\, students may arrange to work in the studio individually\, when it is open\, for a use fee.  \nThere are several varieties of plants that contain indigotin pigment that are used by traditional cultures all over the world to obtain the color blue. At Sanborn Mills Farm\, we grow Persicaria tinctoria\, also known as Japanese indigo. For this pigment to be accessible to dyers\, it must be extracted from the leaves and then put into an alkaline solution with a reducing agent. This turns the liquid greenish yellow. After the fiber is removed from the vat looking green\, the magic happens right before your eyes as it oxidizes. \nThis workshop will cover the basics of working with powdered natural indigo extract to make and maintain a vat for long term use using ferrous sulfate as the reduction agent. Other natural vats\, using organic materials such as henna or fruit sugar will be discussed and demonstrated if there is interest. The advantage of the iron vat is that it is very stable\, so advantageous in a workshop setting. The essentials of fiber preparation\, scouring for different kinds of fibers\, and finishing will be covered for best results. Basic shibori techniques using stitching (mokume)\, pole wrapping (arashi)\, and clamping (itajime) will be taught. We will also explore ways to use clay paste resist (for painting and printing) and Japanese rice paste resist technique (katazome) with stencils. We will be working primarily with cellulose fiber (cotton\, linen etc.). Protein (silk\, wool\, etc.) will be discussed and samples shown. Cotton cloth will be used for samples in class. White bandanas\, and cotton t-shirts will be available for students to purchase if desired. Students may also bring some used clothing for over-dyeing and up-cycling if they wish to work on them after regular class hours. Students will finish the class with a selection of samples and a notebook of recipes and techniques. \nThe indigo extract used in this workshop will be extract that is available commercially. To learn how to extract indigotin pigment from fresh plants and process your own extract\, see our workshop Fresh Leaf Indigo and Pigment Extraction in the Natural Dye Basics series.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nHow to make a natural indigo vat with indigo extract powder and ferrous sulfate as the reducing agent\n How to properly use and maintain the vat\nFiber preparation: scouring cloth for best results\nFinishing the cloth after dyeing: neutralizing\, curing\, and washing\n Three resist techniques: shibori\, clay resist\, and rice paste resist\nOver-dyeing indigo with other colors to make green\, purple\, and brown\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Sara Goodman \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nStudents may bring 1 or 2 pieces of their own clothing for embellishment\, over-dyeing or up-cycling\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$50.00 includes fabric for samples\, all dyes and assists\, notebook of recipes and instructions paid at time of workshop\nBandanas $2.00\nT-shirts $5.00\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
