SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket
DESCRIPTION:Adirondack Pack Basket\n \n \n \n \n \n Linda Scherz \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, September 24th – Sunday\, September 25th \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. These versatile baskets were used to carry just about everything the guides\, hunters\, and trappers took with them into the woods. This will be a weekend of weaving your utilitarian pack. Create your own utilitarian pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets.  \nOn the first day\, students weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut reed spokes and then weave the sides. Linda will be guiding students as they concentrate on shape\, creating a belly while learning to continuous weave. The main weaving will be done the first day. The baskets will sit and dry overnight. On the second day\, students will pack baskets tight\, level the top\, weave a false rim\, cut and tuck spokes\, insert a handmade oak handle\, and fit the rim to the basket\, and lash rim. Lastly\, students will add an adjustable webbing or leather harness secured with skids. Linda will guide you and teach you many tips and techniques. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools. Baskets will not be stained during class. \nThis class will be fun and accessible for all levels of weavers.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nWeave a plain-weave base with pre-cut spokes\nCreate a belly while learning to continueous weave \nPack baskets tight\, level the top\nWeave a false rim and cut and tuck spokes\nInsert a handle\nFit the rim to the basket\nLash the rim\nAdd an adjustable cottno or leather harness secured with skids\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Linda Scherz \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll tools and materials are provided\nStudents should be prepared to use a drawknife and other sharp tools\nComfortable clothing is recommended\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMaterials Fee varies with size of pack.\nHarness and Pack size choices must be made three weeks prior to class to allow time for making\nPack size choices: Hiker\, Sightseer\, Mountaineer\n\nHiker\n\nDimensions: 6” x 9” x 14”H\nWebbing harness $79.00\nLeather harness $105.00\n\n\nSightseer\n\nDimensions:  8 ½” x11” x 16”H\nWebbing harness $110.00\nLeather harness $158.00\n\n\nMountaineer\n\nDimensions:  9” x 12” x 20”H\nWebbing harness $129.00\nLeather harness $168.00\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Explorations in Vessel Making with Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Explorations in Vessel Making with Fiber \n \n \n \n \n \n Dayna Talbot \n \n \n \n \n \n Thursday\, September 8 – Friday\, September 9 \n9:00am – 5:00pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n In this two-day workshop\, students will learn two different techniques to create woven sculptural vessels using resists. Students will explore the vessel form through experimentation and invention. \nOn the first\, day\, students will explore the technique of creating sculptural wet felted vessels. Through wet felting techniques\, students will learn to create a sphere or round form and transform it into a vessel\, pod or bowl. Using the ancient process of wet felting\, wool can be transformed into many things. Our focus will be creating a 3D form using a flat circle or oval resist. We will create a using wool roving\, soap and water\, and a resist. This class is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous felt making experience. \nOn the second day\, students will explore the technique of random weaving. It’s not your traditional basket weaving! We will be experimenting with non-traditional techniques to create sculptural forms\, using various material from paper rush to plant material. Student swill be encouraged to use whatever material is suitable to create the desired form\, ex: bowls\, bag of rice\, crumpled paper bound with sticky tape. This is a workshop for those who like exploration and invention. This technique is mostly used to explore form and the unique qualities of the materials used. What you envision in the beginning may not be what comes to fruition but it will be a fun\, meditative process that can open up new ideas and avenues. Embellishment can include yarns\, raffia and colored electrical wire. We will start small and if time permits\, students may choose to start another piece. Students will use an innately colorful selection of willows cultivated at Sanborn Mills and Willow Vale Farms. Students will also learn about the cultivation and processing of this historically important natural material. Our baskets will be built from a round base with weaves mostly in the European tradition\, including pairing\, waling\, randing and woven borders. Every student’s basket will be different! This class is suitable for beginners wanting to learn a base of weaving knowledge or intermediate weavers looking to improve skills and control. Care and use of finished pieces will be discussed in class. \nWillow is a stronger more tension-y material than many other basketry materials\, strong hands are recommended for this course.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAn introduction to several weaving techniques/patterns:\n\nPairing/reverse pairing\nThree-rod wale and four-rod wale\nA variety of “side weaves” including French randing\, English randing\, slewing\, packing\, and zig-zag weave\nWoven rod borders\n\n\nLearning the “feel” of weaving with willow\, a unique material in the US\nLearning the use of willow weaving specific tools: Bodkin\, Rapping Iron\, Fid\, Shaping ties and hoops\, Clippers in a willow context\nIdentifying willow in weaving and learning the growth/processing of willow for weaving\nCreating functional and beautiful 3D shapes\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Jes Clark \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring: \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAll materials will be supplied\nStudents may bring the following tools if they already have them: bodkin\, high-quality sharp pruners (Felco or similar)\, rapping iron\, fid\, conditioning tool (a perfect cylinder with no seams\, appx 3” in diameter\, usually a reusable water bottle/thermos or spray can)\, 2-4lb weights\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n$25.00 – $50.00 paid at time of workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests. SUMMARY:Celebrating with Garlands from Nature
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating with Garlands from Nature\n \n \n \n \n \n Lynn Martin Graton\n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, August 21 \n9:00 am – 5:00 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshop Overview\n \n \n \n \n \n Wearing fresh flowers and greens for celebrations is a tradition shared by many cultures and stretches back to ancient times.  In New England\, the custom of making garlands to celebrate May Day is based upon traditions brought long ago from England.  \nThe wearing of flower garlands for celebrations and weddings is also a custom in many parts of Europe\, Asia and the Pacific Islands. Each culture has a unique approach to fashioning garlands\, but all cultures value their beauty and make them with care and skill. \nCome join fiber artist Lynn Martin Graton and learn two basic techniques to create fresh garlands for your seasonal celebrations\, weddings\, birthdays and more. The morning session will focus on using a braiding technique with freshly gathered ferns.  The afternoon session will focus on arranging flowers and greens on a core of raffia using a wrapping technique.  \nA selection of ferns and flowers will be provided\, but students are encouraged to bring more to add to the fun.  \nThe most appropriate flowers for this workshop are small with sturdy petals.They include: status\, straw flowers\, alstroemeria\, small chrysanthemums\, small rudbeckia\, miniature roses\, small marigolds\, baby’s breath\, leather leaf ferns\, wildflowers such as Goldenrod and other sturdy greens that can be separated into smaller parts.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Skills + Techniques\n \n \n \n \n \n Students will learn:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nIncorporating fresh materials into a stable\, uniform braid\nIncorporating fresh materials into a stable\, uniform core using a wrapping technique\nDiscussions will focus on: \n\nThe different ways that cultures value and utilize fresh garlands for celebrations\nCultivating a garden for garlands\nResponsible harvesting of natural materials\nSensitivity to varying color and texture using fresh materials\nConsideration of best use of materials for specific occasions\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Instructor\n \n \n \n \n \n Lynn Martin Graton \n \n Learn More \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tools + Materials\n \n \n \n \n \n Students should bring:\n \n \n \n \n \n \nSmall clippers\nSmall spray bottle for water\nA container or basket to take garlands home\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Material Fee:\n \n \n \n \n \n \n$15.00 – $25.00 payable at time of workshop \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n COVID-19 \n \n \n \n \n \n \nPlease read our COVID-19 Policy prior to registering\nWe are honoring each instructor’s specific COVID-19 safety requests.
